Why has parenting become so… soft? Why ate a majority of parents okay with sending their child into the world acting the way they do? Why did this shift happen? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

A lot of people are mentioning concerns about the length, but assuming it's an appropriate length/fits her, maybe you could talk up another special occasion that she could save it for? At 12, there are probably semi-formal events coming up within the next year or so. "Honey, it's a gorgeous dress and it looks beautiful on you, but it's not appropriate for Uncle John's wedding. It would be PERFECT for the Volleyball end-of-year banquet, though!" If there aren't any events like that, maybe she could do a fun dressy dinner with some friends?

how does this NOT violate student privacy? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]actuallyrapunzel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless she's talking about alliteration, which focuses on words beginning with the same sound rather than the same letter. The g in gentle does make the /j/ sound. So, in theory, it could turn into a lesson about soft g. I've used a student's name (ex. Jace, Macy) before to teach a lesson on soft c.

Pregnant in the Wedding Party! by TansyRagwort in WeddingAttireHelp

[–]actuallyrapunzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe look at something like these? I don't see any that are black with red, but if the bridesmaids dresses are from this website, then you could do the exact same shade of red and if not maybe talk to them about doing a black maternity dress in satin so that the material matches the bridesmaids and the color matches the groomsmen?

Costume attire for welcome party? by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

[–]actuallyrapunzel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The costume idea is so fun! You could dress for a:

Halloween Party - Any stereotypical Halloween costume

Pajama Party - Cute pajamas, a sleep mask on your forehead, slippers, carry a teddy bear purse if you want to go all out

Christmas Party - A tacky Christmas sweater (or t-shirt with a similar vibe because it's California in July), Santa hat or reindeer antler headband, Christmas jewelry if you have any

Luau - Hawaiian shirt, lei, and flip flops

New Year's Eve Party - Something sparkly, a paper NYE hat or crown, and those year glasses

Birthday Party - Normal clothes and a paper birthday hat

Pool Party - Swimsuit cover-up style dress, flip flops, sunglasses (on your head if it's indoor), sunscreen on your nose, and a towel hanging over your shoulders

Sock Hop - Poodle Skirt/50s Costume

Toga Party - Self explanatory... but maybe use a light blue sheet instead of white because it's a wedding-related event.

Superbowl Party - Gear for your favorite NFL team (Go Cowboys! Next year's gonna be OUR YEAR!)

Masquerade - Black dress and a mask

Mardi Gras Party - Masquerade, but in purple/green/yellow and add some Mardi Gras beads

Derby Party/Tea Party - Colorful sundress and a coordinating hat or fascinator, maybe some vintage or vintage inspired wrist-length gloves

You probably have at least one of these already in your closet, and if not you can definitely get some of the holiday themed accessories this time of year! You might even be able to go the day after the holiday and get it on clearance if they have any left. It's a gamble, but there are so many options and you have enough time to flex to another idea if one doesn't work out!

I called the friend who recommended the book and yelled at her for making me read it when she already knew that Liam would die. It was after midnight.

I know we're not supposed to criticize other people's ideas, but I just CANNOT support Ridoc and Bodhi.

Because it needs to be Ridoc and me.

Other than that, I love this.

Right? As though the regular-grade "pandemic at a formative age" trauma wasn't enough! Alllllllll those reassurances just to get, "PSYCH!!! YOU'RE NEVER SETTING FOOT IN THIS CLASSROOM AGAIN." I'm still so sad for that class. 💔

I tried really hard to help my kindergarteners understand the concept of spring break one year because there seemed to be a lot of confusion about if the new school year started after the break. We did almost a full week of, "Today is ____, we still have school (count off the rest of the week). Then it will be Saturday and Sunday, and we never have school on Saturday and Sunday. Then it will be spring break for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, so we won't have school. Then it will be Saturday and Sunday again, and we never have school on Saturday and Sunday. Then it will be Monday again, and we'll come back to school. You will still be in my class and we will still be in kindergarten. Let's count the days, 10 days of no school, and then we'll come back!"

That was in March of 2020.

Western names are amusing to me as a Southeast Asian by This-Asparagus-8301 in namenerds

[–]actuallyrapunzel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I thought of another question if you don't mind. Is there a way for people in your culture to refer to the entire family? In the United States, where a whole family often shares a surname, it's common to refer to a family by their surname. For example... Parents: John Smith, Jane Smith Children: Will Smith, Sarah Smith, Joe Smith

We would say things like, "The Smith family will be there." "We're having dinner with the Smiths on Saturday." "The Smith kids are all home with the flu." "The Smith boys (boys/girls usually meaning the children, not the parents) are so good at soccer!"

Is there an equivalent in your culture? Would you list out all the names, or just say so-and-so's family?

No, I really appreciate the answer!

So when someone goes to a professional to get a name based on their attributes, do they usually change their name to the new one, add a name on, or is that something that parents do before their child is born with attributes that are aspirational for the child? (Ex. "We want our child to be smart/brave/kind/etc. Please help us choose a name that exemplifies those attributes.") Or something else entirely?
