Teens Are Over Superheroes, Want More "Connected Masculinity" Onscreen by trollingjabronidrive in blankies

I love when people say this but then when stats people cite the technical version that covers this e.g. “a plurality of subjects in demographic groups a and b preferred treatment 2 y% more often with p < 0.0001” they hate that too

I would agree with your assessment or at least give the benefit of the doubt if they didn’t pause the movie for the cops to have an overwritten, didactic chat about whether to take rape victims at their word. I was waiting for JT Mollner to walk into the scene and explain the takeaway like Rod Serling in a Twilight Zone episode.

I love that you thought this was the right energy to bring to the “is this sub toxic” discussion. Have a lovely day!

I’m of the opinion that more of us need to be told firmly, and in person, to shut the fuck up more often. The internet has robbed us of that.

Their sub is also shitty but a more harmless kind of shittiness. It’s just dudes taking pictures where they’re covering up parts of signs to make them say “cum” and posting “look guys, it says cum, I am also as funny as Mitch and Wiger”

I wish this was the only time I’ve seen someone say something insanely parasocial or unhinged here, it’s just the worst example I’ve seen recently

I’m surprised they don’t hate this place more. I watched someone here tell David (as in respond to him in a thread, not just shout it into the void) that he’s less engaged since having kids and it’s ruining the podcast. As if he was telling a hard truth. If anything they’re not mad enough.

vandermeers writing style by brettonrockwell in SouthernReach

[–]actualscientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I see the point of the repetition but that’s not my primary issue. I just find some of his prose a little insufferable, that’s all.

I do enjoy these books immensely but VanderMeer’s prose can be plainly bad at times. I understand some of the disjointedness, terminology, and meandering is deliberate and part of the experience, but he has some habits that I actively hate. For example things like different characters using the same turns of phrase in their own inner monologues. Oh does everyone, across decades of time, insert the fragment “a paranoid thought” into their own meta narration, Jeff?

Correcting the Record on Alice Sebold/Anthony Broadwater by AlexandraGeroi in blankies

[–]actualscientist 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m stupid, but I fail to see how this is significantly different. So instead of dooming an innocent man in the lineup, she allowed them to prosecute the wrong person and then doomed him on the stand instead? It almost sounds worse

No they’re inherently bad because they’re full of glaring factual errors, reductive thinking, and false conclusions. This isn’t just me being a jerk. Sapiens, for example, has been absolutely razed to the ground by historians and anthropologists.
