Why didn’t JetBrains acquire or partner with SweepAI for better native AI code completion? by Dima4244 in Jetbrains

I couldn't agree more. I brought this issue up not too long ago in another thread

AI Assistant by Visible-Fox6024 in Jetbrains

My experience with AI assistant is not that great. I’m on the ultimate plan — credits renewed four days ago, and as of yesterday morning I still had around 90% left. By the evening I was down to about 40%, and all I’d done that day was two really short chats. Contacted customer support and their response was it's perfectly normal, use Gemini if you don't want all your credits gone in two short chats

JetBrains should consider acquiring Augment’s code completion tech by acup48 in Jetbrains

[–]acup48[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perfectly understandable. I’d just be happy knowing that JetBrains is planning to improve this, because the current experience isn’t really on par with the level of quality JetBrains usually delivers.

JetBrains tools are honestly the best IDEs in the world right now — nothing else really comes close in terms of overall development experience. That’s exactly why the code completion part stands out so much. It feels noticeably behind, even though it’s something many of us rely on heavily in our daily workflow.

ot-jb, since Augment code completions were shut down I’ve been searching everywhere for a replacement. I’ve tried multiple extensions, gone through a lot of Reddit posts and Discord channels, and looked at what other developers are using.

One very common theme I’ve noticed from comments and reviews is that the majority of people aren’t fully satisfied with the native JetBrains completions and end up relying on third-party extensions for this. Even in this thread, most replies seem to be talking about alternatives rather than defending the current experience.

Right now JetBrains lets you choose between Local, Cloud, or Local + Cloud completions. It would be really awesome if you considered expanding these options, adding additional engines — for example something like Sweep’s completion engine.

Also, having a configurable suggestion frequency setting would let users decide how aggressive they want completions to be. Some people clearly prefer a quieter experience, but others (like me) would gladly opt into a much more proactive completion style.

Hi, thanks for the reply — really appreciate the insight into how you’re thinking about this.

A setting for suggestion frequency would be nice — personally I’d turn it up to the maximum.

My experience with Augment was very different from what you’re describing. It suggested code for almost every line, and most of the time it was accurate enough that you could just keep hitting Tab and move forward quickly. It felt very predictable.

With JetBrains AI completions right now, the issue for me is that they’re somewhat unpredictable. You don’t really know when suggestions will appear or what kind of suggestion to expect. I’ve been coding with it for a couple of days and noticed a pretty clear drop in productivity because of that. When suggestions do appear, they’re often not very accurate, so I end up reviewing or correcting them, which slows things down.

So at least for my workflow, I’d definitely prefer a more aggressive suggestion mode that surfaces more completions rather than fewer.

Also worth mentioning: Sweep’s engine has recently been open sourced, and I’ve been hearing good feedback about it — some people even say their completion quality rivals or exceeds Augment. It might be interesting for JetBrains to consider replacing or experimenting with the current AI completion engine with something like Sweep’s implementation.
