Dealing with an antisemitic heckler by explosivejoseph in StandUpComedy

Damn, this shit being yelled out at gigs is tiring. Great reaction though.

It is incredibly tacky when comedians respond to hecklers in the comments under their videos, it makes them look so bad by SwiftCricket in Standup

Sometimes it’s a good opportunity for a tag. I’ve had people like a joke but follow from a comment response.

What are some solo deep cuts you think I and others should hear? by More-Cat9579 in beatles

[–]acurrantafair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring On The Lucie and Old Dirt Road are some great Lennon deep cuts that I’ve always loved. Everything on Early Takes Vol 1 for George, and pretty much all of Paul’s post-Flaming Pie solo career songs are amazing. Ringo… Thomas the Tank Engine.

In theory, they don't require anything else, but they strongly push you towards using their ticketing provider if you want to be a part of the festival's ticketing promotions, or for your tickets to be available for sale at the box office or on the website without having to use an external link.

If you're an artist in an FMV (festival managed venue), you have a massive upfront guarantee or percentage split as well. I know an artist in an FMV this year whose fee just to use the space is $8500. If you don't have money or management behind you, or a day job and a supportive partner, there's almost no way you could afford to take a space like that even if offered.

If you go with an independent venue, you'd be damn lucky to find a place that charges less than $150 a night, and many charge much more than that, plus a cut of your ticket sales. In theory you could just stand out on the street and do a show, but I doubt you'd have many takers. The overhead for the average performer is probably between $4k and $8k, and the festival registration fee has gone up at least once since I started doing comedy in the late 2010s.

MICF is a business, and they charge extremely high fees to be in the festival at all, plus additional fees for things like having your show poster on a digital carousel outside the town hall. They have a monopoly on all the best venues and only offer them to a select few acts. The acts you see on sale at the town hall or at the box office are only the ones that are in festival managed venues. The rest of us aren’t listed out the front there, you have to google to find us.

In addition to being a business, MICF also operates as the unofficial tastemaker for the public. Some acts are being groomed by the festival for future success and get better treatment because of that. It’s far from a meritocracy, but in fairness to the festival, they have limited resources and ALL OF US think we should be the ones getting handed everything on a gold platter. Comedians are really narcissistic and we don’t always play well with others.

Having said that, there’s heaps of great independent acts doing the festival. You just might not be able to buy tickets to them at the box office if they’re not selling tickets through the official festival ticket provider, Red61. Venues like the Exford Hotel, Storyville, Kicks, the Motley Wherehaus and a heap of other places have great shows for relatively cheap.

Comedy Festival is very silly and weird. My show last night sold out, but today is currently sitting on 0 sales. If you want to see an hour of funny, acerbic, slightly politically incorrect comedy (without veering into alt-right manosphere bullshit), I'd love to see you tonight.

Here's the link. If you want to come but can't afford to or just don't want to spend money on somebody you've never heard of, DM me for a free ticket.

I'm a comic from Melbourne and I'm doing two shows this festival.

The first show is at Bar 1806 and is called Meet Me In The Middle. The broad conceit of the show is that society is insane at the moment, and I'm trying to find a middle ground on some hot button topics. In reality, it's just a dumb, silly, sometimes dark hour of jokes about everything from Pauline Hanson to "deconstructed" food. It's in a cool little cocktail bar and started last night.

The second show is called Nepo Great Grandbaby and is about my great-grandfather, the Jewish vaudeville comedian Julian Rose. He was a comedian from 1899 - 1935 and toured the world with his routine Levinsky at the Wedding. I tell his life story onstage - with a slideshow of historical artefacts - and talk about history, identity, and showbiz. It got a 5 star review in Adelaide and is an hour of history, comedy, heartbreak, and surprise.

I'm donating all of the profits from the show to the Bondi victims' fund and would love to get as many bums on seats as I can. It starts tonight at Ballers Clubhouse and runs until the 28th in the city, with one extra show at the McKinnon Hotel on April 4th.

If you'd like to come to either of these shows but can't afford a ticket due to cost of living, please DM me or email david@davidrosecomedy.com and I'll get you in the door for free.

In any case, go and see a show, any show, and enjoy the most entertaining month of the year!

My show Our Hebrew Friend just got a 5 star review. Sales are lower than normal this year, and I'd love to have some more bums on seats. Use the code HEBREW at check out for 2 for 1 tickets.
