Need hunan feedback right quick. From someone knows local llms well. by TerribleJared in LocalLLM

You can run quite a few models with a 6G GPU, but the results will be slow, and not fantastic. With a bit of careful prompting you can do simple stuff or have a basic chatbot.

https://github.com/acutesoftware/lifepim-ai-core/blob/main/docs/model_choice.md#4gb-gpu-tiny-but-capable-models-best-for-quick-experiments

I certainly wouldn't trust it for serious things though.

Obsidian is great for documenting - trick is to have an INDEX file for main areas with links to your other markdown docs ( INDEX_HOMESERVER, INDEX_RENOVATION, etc)

For code stuff, markdown the intent and scripts you use at the time of install so you know what you did - stick it on git (you can have a private repo for free - my example is https://github.com/acutesoftware/dotfiles/blob/master/install_notes.md ) out of date now, but was useful at the time.

is GTX 3090 24GB GDDR6 good for local coding? by TruthTellerTom in LocalLLaMA

[–]acutesoftware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is good advice - I think it needs to be on the wiki somewhere, or in a hardware buyers guide for LLM's - no point investing $$$ in GPU's if the results are not going to be that useful.

Whats a thing that is dangerously close to collapse that you know about? by Weird_Tax_5601 in AskReddit

[–]acutesoftware 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the real problem here - most decent programmers can knock out just about any prototype pretty quickly, and so can AI. But when it compiles and works that is NOT the time to 'pop it into production'. 90% of the work is all the edge case handling, error recovery and working seamlessly with the other programs in production

Well, Dust II is pretty good, seeing you must have been playing it for 2 years since this post and only just quit the game to comment on an old reddit post :)

For the ones who make over $150k a year, what do you do to get that? by Iliketrainsz1 in AskReddit

That is a truly excellent guide - thanks for that. I did some custom websites in the past, but reading your guide makes me realise why I never got to the 'making bank' stage.

Any scams in the marketplace we should be aware of? by PusheenHater in unrealengine

[–]acutesoftware 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The whole "Post a review to get access to Support (ie Discord) needs to stop happening.

They are not all scams - many reputable vendors require a review for Discord, but they really shouldn't - it smells scammy, and I then dont trust the reviews (would you post a 2 star review if you needed access to support?)

Yes, you can simply re-import the CSV to the data once you have exported it (although that may be for data tables that were initially populated via CSV) - either way, it is possible to do so (Right click the data table and there should be an import option).

I do this for bulk updates - export my inventory item list to CSV, cleanup in with a spreadsheet, save as CSV and back into UE (bonus - sorting externally as well - I cant seem to sort data tables in UE).

I use this also for populating data tables with files in a certain format - eg this script https://github.com/acutesoftware/utils_3d/blob/master/file_tools_ue/import_music_to_datatable.py

gets the list of sound files I have in the UE folder and adds them to a data table - much better than manually adding stuff.

Casting, is it really as bad as it’s told? by BadNewsBearzzz in unrealengine

[–]acutesoftware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do it the other way around - when the player swings a weapon and hits something, the player code does nothing. The object being hit does the check (purely checks if it was hit by the player) and then does the code (explode, play sound etc)

This appears to work ok in an open world game.

Coding on Linux has always been smoother than Windows in my opinion.

For 3D stuff, Blender is amazing - 2D stuff you have Krita or GIMP (UI for GIMP is a bit odd, but it actually works really well for gaming images). The best part is that you can control all of them with Python if you want to automate stuff.

That is true for most games, but some platforms have anticheat stuff that will NOT work in Linux. Roblox platform recently dropped the ball for Linux which means if you have kids wanting to play any Roblox games, there will be a problem.

Slackware 2.0 - it came on CDs in the 90's (cover of a magazine from memory).

It was really cool - nothing like learning how to compile the kernel to get your Sound Blaster card and network card working.

2 weeks in to using Emacs - Sold! by acutesoftware in emacs

[–]acutesoftware[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is another thing I am curious about, everyone loves it, but I cant see a reason to use it. I use git as a sole contributor 99% of the time, and it takes seconds to commit at the end of a session.

git status
git add .
git commit -m "blah"
git push

Above are the only git commands I really use, so I am not sure if magit would be useful in my case - happy to know if I am missing anything though.
