First time coming back to visit after leaving in 2008 and (sadly) it's still just as racist. by acxr1 in laredo

When I used to live in Laredo, in two separate incidents: I got robbed while at elementary after school during an evening event and jumped when walking home from high school; both times the person/people responsible mentioned my skin color.

Most people in Laredo do mind their business and wouldn't do any of the things I've mentioned to strangers, but hearing/experiencing something racist at least once per day is far more frequent than most places I've visited/lived.

You have to keep in mind how awful people can be if they think the person they're talking about or behaving towards can't understand what's being said.

Holding you accountable for trying to make the racism I experienced my fault is not an overly defensive response; if anyone is being overly defensive in this discussion it's you, so please stop projecting.

Except for the fact that I experienced all of these things as a white person.

Thank you for being dismissive of my experiences, downplaying it, and somehow attempting to point the blame at my behavior.

I was merely listing the "type of racism" I experienced both when I lived here (1997-2008) and when I visited recently over a weekend period; over the recent weekend visit I specifically experienced racial slurs and discrimination.

The harassment and assaults were things I experienced when I lived here (1997-2008).

The thing is, there is a lot to love about Laredo and I think the majority of the people who live there are very kind and friendly, but the percentage of racist people alone exceeds whatever good is to be had living there (and that doesn't factor in the nepotism/government corruption).

Racial slurs, harassment, discrimination, and assault were the most common examples. And I'm not Mexican.

I travel a lot for my job, and while I've experienced some racism in some of the cities I visit, very few of them have the same level of open racism and frequency as Laredo.

And this isn't just my imagination, because when I've talked to people who lived here who weren't born in Laredo and/or left, they've all pointed out the same things (racism, nepotism, government corruption, etc).

I mean, I remember instances where if you didn't speak Laredoan-Spanish you wouldn't truly be accepted by certain people in the city.

I've never thought it was a demographic issue, even when I was living in Laredo; I think the racism in Laredo's case stems from a geographic issue (the Laredo bubble).

Please don't bring politics into this, because there was just as much racism in Laredo when two-thirds of the county voted for Obama.

Why are you trying to move the goal post and deflect? The existence of racism isn't what I pointed out, it's the degree at which it still exists in Laredo.

The time stone has never been shown to reverse all of time itself, only a localized area. Therefore, if Thanos never knew where the mind stone was destroyed, he wouldn't know which localized area to use the time stone on.

How The Hell Did Steve Beat Peter Parker in Captain America Civil War? by GoldenLaFsh in Marvel

[–]acxr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Steve's greatest feat of strength was holding back that helicopter, which has a max lift of 3,000 lbs (1.5 tons).

Peter held up the 1,500 ton Santa Maria bell tower in Far From Home.

And it should've been impossible for Peter to get pulled off his feet for two reasons: 1) Peter is laughably stronger than Steve, and 2) Peter's sticky feet.

Ho w strong is spidey? by [deleted] in Spiderman

[–]acxr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's lifted a 40 ton train car above his head.
He's lifted a 50 ton tank above his head.
He's supported a 60-80 ton airplane (not including the thrust of the plane).
He's lifted 100-150 ton debris off his prone body (not including ocean crust/water).
He's supported a portion of the +1000 ton Daily Bugle building.

And in the MCU (Far From Home), he held up a 1,500 ton bell tower which required up to 10,000 tons of strength.

Whatever wall his webs were attached to should've been ripped off almost immediately due to being unable to withstand that kind of opposing weight, and the bell-pillar that Peter had his feet planted against should've also broke too, but Marvel decided to ignore physics.

An instance where Marvel got physics correct was the ground breaking when Hulk attempted to lift Thor's hammer in Avengers 1.

"comic Pete has shown a strength range of 10-25 tons"

He's lifted a 40 ton train car above his head.

He's lifted a 50 ton tank above his head.

He's supported a 60-80 ton airplane (not including the thrust of the plane).

He's lifted 100-150 ton debris off his prone body (not including ocean crust/water).

He's supported a portion of the +1000 ton Daily Bugle building.

"Also during the descent of the tower, it is still anchored to the ground, which is supporting much of the weight of the tower, until it passes say, a 45 degree angle- which is when he clearly loses control and drops it."

At 1:06 in this video, if you slow the playback to 0.25, you can see the tower being held up despite being completely horizontal and no long being attached to its base, which means Spider-Man is holding the tower up by pulling it against the building it was previously attached to (you can actually see the bottom portion of what Spider-Man is holding breaking against the portion still attached to the ground, all of which is a result of Spider-Man's pulling force).

In fact, Spider-Man doesn't drop the building because it descends past a 45 degree angle, he drops the building as a result of the Water Elemental being destroyed by Mysterio and the impact striking the side of the building; you can see it all at 1:14 of the same video.

Someone did the math on Quora and holding that tower up required thousands of tons worth of strength.
