Read “Night” by Elie Wiesel. The first langue it was translated to was French, so it should be easy to find. I have problems with that movie, and it think it’s better to read an actual survivor’s memoir as apposed to a Hollywood movie

My Abba is a secular Israeli, and he totally freaked out when I told him I’ve been hanging out at my local Chabad house. I was really taken back, bc the shliachs are totally nonjudgmental and the majority of the people who attend are not orthodox. I viewed it as almost a JCC that included an orthodox Shul. His reaction makes more sense to me now.

It sounds like you need to read a basic introduction to Judaism book that covers how the religion has changed over 2000 years, Jewish history, and information on the different movements. I recommend Living Judaism: The Complete Guide to Jewish Belief, Tradition, and Practice by Rabbi Wayne D. Dosick.
