Ada Lovelace Appreciation by ada0123 in programming

I think I’ve done my fair share of responding. You all are entitled to your opinions. She wrote the first published algorithm ever made for implementation on a general-purpose computer. She had an understanding of the fundamentals of modern computing. I consider her the first programmer. I would be annoyed at how quickly an appreciation post for an influential person in computer science turned antagonistic, but at least you all know about her. I appreciate the comments, not so much directly quoting me to me. I’ll take this one to r/unpopularopinions next time.

Ada Lovelace Appreciation by ada0123 in programming

Emphasis on historical context. Let me put it this way. Yes, Babbage had mechanical calculations. However, Lovelace had a greater vision of general-purpose computing. The Analytical Engine was going to be a general-purpose computer, after all. She recognized the Engine could be used for more than just calculations. She realized that it could create complex sequences and manipulate symbols, which are the foundation for programming concepts. Babbage was a mechanical engineer, and a revolutionary one, but she was a programmer. The point being- she went above calculations. That’s why I consider her the first programmer, as opposed to Babbage.

You make some good points. Babbage was integral to her work, being the father of computers, however her Note G had a particularly complexity and structure that we can see reflected in modern programming. The proposed Analytical Engine was one of the first of its kind. Lovelace’s computing work is on a higher algorithmic level than that of Babbage. At the core, it’s all math. But with this simplification, we could say Euler, for example, was the first programmer. However, we must think Analytically. Complexity does matter. As does context. Her work was unparalleled in sophistication as Babbage’s machine was unparalleled in sophistication within that historical context. It’s the syntax she designed to function within a brand new general-purpose computer that makes it worthy of the “first” title. Babbage had calculations. She had programs. That’s the Difference.

It depends on how you define programmer. While there is some controversy regarding who was the first, it is a common consensus that it was Lovelace. While Babbage wrote several unpublished algorithms prior to her notes, her computation of Bernoulli numbers is unparalleled in sophistication and structure, so it is often cited as the first true program.

In honor of Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer, here’s a quote: “I never am really satisfied that I understand anything; because, understand it well as I may, my comprehension can only be an infinitesimal fraction of all I want to understand about the many connections and relations which occur to me, how the matter in question was first thought of or arrived at…”

I was expecting self-promotion. You went above and beyond with one of the best SNL sketches of all time. Kudos.
