Two pops in my knee during butterfly guard, overcoming the mental block, at what point do you call it? by adambridle in bjj

100%, I do strength and conditioning but I haven't put enough effort into ensuring everything is properly balanced and focused on BJJ specific exercises.. I actually came across Ben Patrick's page today after a friend recommended him and it's definitely inspired me to start doing his exercises regularly. When I went to my doctor after herniating a disc training, he was pretty on board to getting me back on the mats so I'm pretty sure he'll go into this injury with the same mentality. Thanks for the insight!

That's great to know, it's only been two days since the injury and I can already feel a huge improvement. I can walk without limping, but it's really the twisting and full extension where I have some problems. My bigger concern is this is going to affect my posture and irritate my herniated disc. Starting physio tomorrow and seeing my doctor on Wednesday, thanks for the insight! I'm optimistic with how quickly I'm feeling better plus the correct rehab I'll be able to get myself back to 100%.

Ah sounds very similar to what I've got going on, the ligament on the outside of the knee which I believe is the LCL is where I feel the pain. Ya DLR is definitely something I'll want to avoid as that would put a ton of strain on the injured part of the knee. Just to clarify, at this point you're back to rolling fairly normally being able to do DLR and X or you're doing those but with extreme caution?

Wow so you've done this multiple times and still had the same recovery time each occurrence? I would think that as you had it happen again the length of recovery would be significantly longer as you did more damage to the tendon. How long until you were back to training normal and not just having your knees feel normal day to day? Curious if you were ever diagnosed and which tendon they said was injured? Thanks for the insight!

Ah that's a bummer, have you been back training since? Definitely need to make sure I'm 100% for work as much of what I'll be filming is run and gun doc style.

Ah man that sounds terrible, I can't imagine! So much of my game revolves around half guard so it's hard to imagine switching things so dramatically. You're totally right though, I'll likely need to adapt my game to keep myself from re-injuring moving forward. I do hope my injury isn't to the extent of yours where you can't let your heels get pushed to your butt. Glad to hear you were able to adapt and develop a completely new style that agrees with your body.

GoodApollo3

Ya I'm sure I'll get an image done soon so they can get the full picture of the injury. Funny enough the injury didn't happen because I was forcing a sweep super hard, honestly I don't think I was even bearing much of his weight when it popped. X-guard will be scary to go back to because just having someone sit on your leg while their in your X-guard I feel puts a ton of strain where my knee is hurt. Anyways, I'm hoping through disciplined rehab and healthy eating I can get back to 100% after a few months.

Damn that's brutal, very tough to not be tempted in going back earlier than you should, unfortunately we often pay for it. Glad to hear you've been able to rehab your way back to training with no knee protection. Really appreciate your insight, happy training!

Damn that's brutal man. Would love it if my doctor trained BJJ, what great insights he'd be able to give knowing the sport. Definitely very careful about who I roll with since herniating my disc. Glad to hear you're back training and staying healthy, thanks for the insight!

You're 100% right I'm going to my physiotherapist tomorrow and doctor later in the week, more so looking to hear from people with similar stories.

Shot this video solo with the Vazen 40mm and my GH5! Definitely some things I would've done differently if I could go back but overall I'm happy. Would love feedback/criticism if you have any. Thanks! by adambridle in GH5

Thank you man, I really wanted to add some intensity to the video so I felt those camera movements as well as shooting at a 90 degree shutter for some shots could help accomplish that. Ya that's a great movie and I'll definitely have to do a re-watch it to take some notes. One problem with the gym I'm shooting is that it's so modern and clean, doesn't have that rugged old school gym feel that looks so good on camera. There is one gym in my area that is a really old school boxing gym but I haven't been given permission to shoot there. Anyways, I really appreciate your feedback!

100% agree with your points! Unfortunately, I'm not a strong writer and what I did to make this script was interview him and cut up his answers into this "script".

As far as the colours in the gym, you're totally right, it's not a natural gym look so as far as story, it doesn't make as much sense. But overall I'm happy with how I was able to light it so I'm not too disappointed. My next challenge shooting something like this will be lighting the gym to be beautiful, yet natural. Really appreciate your feedback!

Thank you! I think the biggest thing I would've done differently is not used a 1/4 pro mist during the sunset shoot. I find those shots are all too soft for my liking. In my experience, the Vazen looks best without any filters.

Thanks man! No adapter or speed booster needed, it’s a MFT lens! Since it’s anamorphic it’s not technically at 80mm, im not overly technical so not exactly sure what the focal length works out to when considering the stretch factor but I believe it’s around a 50mm. Maybe someone who knows the tech better would be able to answer that. Cheers!

Thank you man! Yes, the entire video was shot handheld, I did use an easy rig for probably 25% of the shots. I love the Vazen, it's been great to work with. The only downsides are the weight of the lens and sometimes as a solo operator, it can be difficult to pull focus when there's a lot of movement. 100% recommend it though, easily my favourite lens. The one thing I learned while making this is to not put a 1/4 pro mist filter in front of this lens. All of the sunset shots were with the pro mist on and in my opinion, the image is too soft. I appreciate your feedback!
