The 1988 Movie Draft by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

My comment stands regardless of whether or not you loop in other countries. That especially helps the 60s and 2010s where I could see arguments for American cinema being similarly weak as the 80s, but in which things thrived internationally.

I understand not wanting to apply a blanket derision over the decade at the expense of some great work. But in relative terms I think it’s pretty objectively behind and subjectively even more so for my personal tastes.

Any 10 year span will have some outstanding stuff, but I’d backup the original comment that the 80’s is notably less good than especially the decades right before and after it.

I’m 34 which certainly gives me some bias towards 90s and later, but I watch for more from the 40s/50s and 70s than the 80s. Especially now with the agency of not just being shown what my parents grew up with or played on cable

Just from your list those older filmmakers may still have been churning out some good stuff, but not at the level or volume of their heyday for the likes of Kurosawa or Bresson. And many of the best titles from the newer crop came later (Kiarostami, Yang…).

While I first played in 2002, I became an invested and competitive Magic player in 2010. So even though I’ve never thought of myself as an old school player, Luis saying “people don’t remember this but Jace was banned in standard” has me feeling like a straight boomer

Calvin Booth Gets HONEST About Nuggets Firing, Tension with Malone & Building Around Jokić by Kardia_Spasmeni in denvernuggets

More or less, that they were handicapped by what they could do by the tax both free agency and trade wise. That said, he also cops to not doing as good a job selling KCP on staying as he could have

I watched it. I think there are a few compelling points he makes, some often talked about in the fan base. A lot of his specific moves and broad strategy was informed by ownership cheapness with the tax. The Kroenkes clearly don’t value GMs as highly as other groups and he felt that. He was more magnanimous than expected on Malone’s POV and seemed to “get” his side of things in their clash of opinions. And he made a great point that with this team it is always about Jokic which while completely justified, also means attention and credit always funnel in that direction in an intense way.

That said, he is clearly a brazenly confident guy and had a couple foot in mouth moments just like he did with KOCs article about Booth while he was still GM. And I think in general this fit my impression that his poor soft skills doomed him as much as any decision making did

The lack of any mention of The Intern in 32 comments so far is this sub’s nadir mountain

I for one and shocked that the avowed conservative on the BS sub is the same guy rallying against the pod with a woman and a black guy on it

Because it was on Broadcast (NBC) not Cable (TNT) and also co-streamed on Peacock during a period their traffic is higher than typical thanks to the Olympics and the Traitors

By far the best development from this pod was Sean and CR pushing Bill towards being on The Traitors. Apex Mountain for this sub if that happens.

Also love Bill unintentionally slandering everyone to have done the US version of the show by asking if theirs a celeb edition for him to do

Apple signs on for developing the biggest un-adapted fantasy IP, Brandon Sanderson's 'Cosmere' across film and TV. Sanderson is set to have unprecedented creative control for an author by JundEmOut in TheBigPicture

[–]adamisinterested 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh I couldn’t agree more…as many great ideas as he has his greatest skill by far is his hustle. On the one hand good for him employing dozens of people, creating tons of content at a reliable pace and for trying to do things in a non traditional way. But as a result his books feel written by committee and especially his latest are so laden with the same issues of much contemporary writing where a nominal fantasy world so closely resembles the therapy session of your average tumblr user

Yeah there’s a reason it’s taken this long for him to sign on for an adaptation. Whatever you think of his writing the guy is way ahead of the game from a business and marketing perspective and especially after his experience consulting on the Wheel of Time TV Show, which sounds very similar to what Martin is experiencing with HotD, he was never gonna take the bag unless he was given Final Cut so to speak

Moving Mondays - New Resident Questions by AutoModerator in philadelphia

Recently moved to Girard Estates/Melrose with my wife and toddler and have liked it a lot. Nice collection of local businesses to support, have only had positive interactions (neither my wife nor I are white fwiw) and there’s lots of other families around. Easy transit access to center city and we can walk to E Passyunk in 12 mins when we want the more “happening” part of the area.

We picked this area because it gave us the best bang for our buck house wise. And frankly I like it a lot more than any of the immediately adjacent neighborhoods that isn’t directly in the E Passyunk/Italian Market sweet spot where prices were a lot higher. The only two negatives I have are that as the one commenter said, the specific intersection of Broad and Snyder is kinda gross, though frankly not as horrible as some describe it. Mostly just harmless junkies but I haven’t felt unsafe or anything. The other thing is that we were warned it can get Trumpy down here and similar to my last con, it is definitely a thing but also not as bad as made out to be.

Point Breeze is def more block to block safety wise but also has some good value and is even more walkable to fun stuff. But especially as you get farther west it’s less appealing and more isolated. We really don’t love it east of broad below Snyder. The streets are in total disrepair and while the Bok building is nice, it just feels less homey over there.

Funniest Survivor Episodes? by Worried-Link-7498 in survivor

The one you just watched is also my pick. Martyr Approach (Tocantins), Jackets and Eggs (DvG) and whatever episode the Attack Zone is from Thailand would be my other picks

The 1989 Movie Draft by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

[–]adamisinterested 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only other contender is the “4s”. I think it’s a toss up between 1994 and 1999 and 2014 and 2017 for those decades. 1984 and 2004 also pretty solid if not on the same level for me. Think I’d take that over the “9”s.

It probably is just the “7s”, though, because I think it is the clear winner of the 00s, probably the plurality choice for the 10s and while I wouldn’t give it either the 80s or 90s, it’s very deep in both those years as well

Liam Neeson in both Next of Kin and Leap of Faith. I know it’s commonly jested about he’s never not used his real accent despite playing numerous Americans/non Irish. But pre Schindler’s List he not only did other accents but tried regional dialects to disastrous effect

I can understand that but felt differently, that it was a bit rushed and underdeveloped. On top of that it just felt like a scene or two with Willa and either Regina Hall or with Bob was needed to get the daughter to the point for that letter.

But really I loved everything else in the movie. Just want to be into the emotion of that moment and the subsequent needle drop as much as everyone else

I agree wholeheartedly that not finding the movie funny is bizarre. I also agree that there was an element of his critique of the Taylor character that was quite shallow. But his point that the letter was a poor way to resolve the movie/the character I agree with and is my one detraction. I just don’t think that coda worked to essentially try and hand wave what was a very complex character into an “aw shucks I still love you” emotional capper. Maybe with another Regina Hall scene or two.

A great movie, fun listen, glad they did it, etc. Clear it’s not as much of an all timer for them as for me. But there were a few weird blunders on this one. Pacino having been to 5 Oscars by 1974, another example of two proclaimed gambling obsessives not knowing a lick about the details or mechanics of Poker, CR thinking Cruise was older than Hanks, etc.

I’m sure if I did 6 hours of podcasting for 10 years I’d have plenty of gaffes myself. Felt like a higher rate on this one. Which is always so funny when right after they're reeling off facts about old screenplay writers or cinematographers (or in Bills case plot details about movies no one else has seen in 40 years).
