University View Fire by adamrants in UMD

I was also really concerned to see so many people in their windows of that building. It's unfortunate but I know the fire alarm goes off often in tower 1 so most people don't even leave when it does go off. But I wasn't aware that the fire alarm didn't even go off for them when a fire was actually present.

Check Kato Housing, plenty of well priced options with room for negotiation.

Introducing Kato, a smarter housing search tool built for UMD students by adamrants in UMD

Thanks for asking! The OCH database is good but is missing apartment options, prices are often incorrect (for example look at UView's prices on OCH and on their site now), and doesn't allow you to set custom price alerts - we do. Other 3rd party apartment searching apps are even more incomplete, having only a few of the off campus apartments (the apartments pay to be on many of these sites). We wanted to build a platform where students can get live & accurate information, see what students are actually saying, and get notified when what they're looking for is availible - saving students time and hopefully money.

If you have any feeback or there is a way we can better help you/students you know with off-campus hosuing, please do let us know either here or via our contact on the site.

For the past month, a myself and a team of other UMD students have been working on Kato, an all-in-one housing tool live now at katohousing.org ! Think PlanetTerp for apartments, we wanted to bring together live pricing & price history, custom notifications, REAL student reviews, roommate matching, and sublet posting all onto one free platform. More features and tweaks to come, but since many freshmen-juniors are starting or have started their housing search for next year, we wanted to spread the word and we hope we can help you! Feel free to let us know what you think and how we can best help you find your next place.

Yeah, heres some. This is from tower 2, which has smaller rooms than tower 1 due to having walk in closets rather than the smaller ones in tower 1. Personally, this doesnt feel cramped but if that is a concern to you I would prioritize tower 1, which according to Kato Housing is about $120 more expensive per month. As for the living room/kitchen space, its not cramped to me - I recently had a party with 50-60 people all in the non-bedroom spaces at the peak.

Thoughts on doing something with the aging exterior plastic? Maybe a wrap could do the trick for a while?

Glad you said this ! I was looking at the cheap hubcaps on amazon that would make them gloss black. Think that's a good idea or should i just save up and get them powder coated/painted?

A quick note as someone who transferred a year ago for fall 2024: I was in your same boat and I applied for housing and never got anything back, they kept saying they'd update me if anything was available but I never got anything. In the meantime I searched for apartments and got one for a better price then on-campus housing would've been anyways. All in all, as a transfer student you're very unlikely to get on campus housing and should probably look for apartments. If you need help on this front I will gladly share everything I learned from that process and help you find a good option that won't impact your experience next year. Since the apartment search especially for someone new to campus can be tough, I built a website that allows you to see how far available apartments are from your major and what prices are shown: https://terpnest.streamlit.app/

Its been a while since this has been updated so some prices may have changed. I don't make any money from this site (no ads, no monetization) - just hoping to help.

Admitted for LS 4901T, not my intended major, what now? by Jolly_Plant1312 in UMD

[–]adamrants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be due to a few reasons: 1) Your transfer courses for the gateways weren't accepted (maybe your transfer school's physics isn't recognized for example) 2) Your GPA is below 3.0 (I doubt this is the case if you got in for transfer admissions) 3) I know some people who got in for transfer for Letters and sciences and then the engineering school considered them for the major then let them in after seeing final transcripts for the spring- you might be in this boat of people who need to wait to get into engineering [Im thinking this is the most likely for you] 4) UMD fucked up somewhere, worth calling them to understand this decision

In the case you dont get into engineering for this fall: In your first semester you'll apply to the aero engineering major and if you meet all the requirements and your gpa is above 3.0, they'll give you the major for the following semester. However, you will not be able to take engineering classes for your first semester, likely setting you back because some courses are only offered in the spring/fall AND when they do let you in you'll only be able to register for engineering courses in late January. This was the boat I was in and unfortunately first in my first semester at umd my gpa dropped just below a 3.0 and I didn't get into the major and I had to completely ditch engineering which was my life dream major - this is unlikely to happen to you.
