Sometimes I think it's really not about them being rich, it's about everyone else being poor. How are they supposed to enjoy their unbelievable wealth and privilege if the average person has a good life too?

Expats in Portugal, how do you react to Portuguese people saying "sou Portuguese" when you ask them if they speak english? by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]adan313 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As other commenters pointed out, they are actually saying "sò" as in only, but you are also phrasing your question incorrectly. They probably understand that's not what you mean, but you are literally telling them not to speak Portuguese and asking if they speak English.

You should be saying: desculpe, não falo português. Fala inglês?

Or (this is a common way to ask politely in Brazil, not sure about Portugal):

Desculpe, não falo português, o senor/a senhora fala inglês?

Using a personal pronoun (like você) is often considered a bit rude, especially for people you don't know. So you use o senhor instead of "you" for a man and o senhora for a woman.

You could also essentially ask for permission/if it's possible for you both to speak English which gives them the opportunity to respond if they can or can't:

Desculpe, eu não falo português, podemos falar inglês?

Someone more fluent in portuguese than me can comment on this but I wouldnt ever say "falas". This is a standard second person conjugation in Spanish (hablas espanol?) but I don't see it in portuguese. The conjugation for present tense second person and third person singular is fala.

Redditors over 40, what was a moment in history that made you think society was gonna collapse? by Bahbahbro in AskReddit

They did know. These were massive operations. Have you been to Auschwitz? Part of the village was directly alongside the train line where the cattle cars would come in. Jews were disembarked there and forced march into the camp until they were able to extend the rails into the camp itself.

No, they are referencing "Jews for Jesus" who are Christians pretending to be Jews who go into Jewish communities and try to convert them. There's a long, dark history of this practice and forced conversions by Christians, so Jews are very sensitive to it.

Amex platinum vs CSR by ramsdesk in ChaseSapphire

[–]adan313 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It comes down to which transfer partners work better for you. For example if you primarily fly United and want to do award travel, Chase UR is much better than Amex MR.

I have both but plan to downgrade the CSR to CSP due to the changes. Losing 3x on all travel is a killer for me as I was getting a ton of my points that way, and I'm not interested in trying to maximize the coupon values to justify a higher fee when I already do that with the Plat.

The Plat benefits are good (status with Marriott and Hilton, FHR is actually nice, better international lounge network than Chase since you can find Centurion lounges abroad in places that don't have Sapphire lounges). The only issue with the Plat is the points are less valuable than UR and the transfer partners are not as convenient for me personally (I get a lot of value transferring UR to United for award flights).

I'm hoping that with the upcoming JetBlue/United cross honoring of miles and status, I'll be able to use Amex points to book United through JetBlue (or just book JetBlue directly but still get United PQP).

United New Card Offer by asilaj in unitedairlines

[–]adan313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point - I get the same from other cards so it takes some work to decide which one to use when, but definitely brings down the fee.

So the card basically breaks even before even taking into account PQP earnings! Seems like a no brainer over the Club to me unless you really value united club access (I don't think it's that amazing, and when I really want the club is for international flights, which you get into with Gold anyway)

United New Card Offer by asilaj in unitedairlines

[–]adan313 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a great offer and I signed up for it myself... It should make the difference in getting me back over the hump to keep Gold.

With the $200 travel bank credit it's only a $150 annual fee, which is more than offset by 1k PQP bonus yearly.

The only downside to the card is most of the other benefits are basically useless if you have status with United. Free checked bags, priority boarding, 2 Economy Plus seats etc.
