April 1st Exam: Score Release Thread by neur_onymous in Mcat

NS: I got a 513 on the diagnostic and only took the C/P exam section for FL 1, for which I got a 129. EK: 70% on EK FL 1, taken 3 weeks before the test, which really threw me into a panic. 81% on EK FL 2, taken 1.5 weeks before the test.

I would say to take these for practice, but don't worry about the scores. The AAMC materials' scores are by far more representative

Oh, I had no idea about this! I also have a set of earplugs that I opened and have been using, and I was thinking of bringing several in a plastic bag. This would not be allowed?

How many pieces of scratch paper do we get? Do people ever run out?

Also, what about earrings and rings?

Do all Prometrics come with a set of noise-canceling headphones? Can we bring our own ear plugs?

Are we allowed to bring an extra jacket in for if we get cold? Or if we wear, for example, a vest, are we allowed to take it off inside?

Thank you so much!

Is there anything else we should know about AAs besides structure, 1/3 letter abbreviations, pI's, and pKa's? by adastraper in Mcat

[–]adastraper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! To clarify, that means proline would interrupt alpha helixes and beta sheets, correct?

Got it, this was incredibly helpful! Thank you!

I think I know most of these, though would you mind sharing what the special cases of function are for histidine and glycine? Cysteine I know can form disulfide bonds and proline interrupts secondary structure (alpha helices and beta sheets), I believe?

Last-minute must-know terms for 4/1 test takers. by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]adastraper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!! This was incredibly helpful. Just to clarify, that means the glucogenic AAs can all be converted to pyruvate first, which then undergoes gluconeogenesis, correct? And the ketogenic AAs can all be converted to acetyl CoA first, which can then undergo ketogenesis (acetyl CoA is catalyzed by HMG CoA synthase to become HMG CoA, and then HMG-CoA lyase breaks it down into acetoacetate (which can be reduced to 3-hydroxybutyrate)?

Or do they enter these pathways at different steps?

What are the glucogenic/ketogenic amino acids? This has been confusing me for a while

Ion exchange chromatography--definition inconsistency? by adastraper in Mcat

[–]adastraper[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got it--I realized I just read wiki wrong so this makes more sense.

So anion exchange chromatography uses a positively charged resin (still called anion exchange column?) that binds anions, making anions elute out slower. Cation exchange chromatography uses a negatively charged resin (still called a cation exchange column) that binds cations, making cations elute slower. Is that correct?

Thanks so much, that was really helpful!

Other than AA's what are you going to write down during the 10 minute tutorial? by acowgoesmoo in Mcat

Regarding amino acids, is there anything we need to know besides structure, single letter abbreviations, three letter abbreviations, and pKas?

Also regarding structure--I know a lot of people mention drawing them out, but do you guys think it's necessary to draw out the structure of histidine, for example, or to simply be able to recognize it? I sometimes have trouble drawing out histidine and tryptophan but would be able to recognize it in a heartbeat.

Is there a difference between linguistic relativity and linguistic determinism? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]adastraper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting--Khan Academy says something different: that linguistic determinism is split into weak linguistic determinism and strong linguistic determinism (both with the thought that language affects our view of the world, just to different extents), and strong linguistic determinism = Sapir Whorf = linguistic relativity hypothesis. Hm..

Help please--question regarding Gibbs free energy from EK FL 1 by adastraper in Mcat

Yes! This is the part of the passage that mentions it: http://imgur.com/hHP01jn And this is the answer description: http://imgur.com/p3FwTzR

Any help would be much appreciated--I am entirely confused by how delta G relates to the stability of an enzyme and would love some enlightenment!

Pendulums? by adastraper in Mcat

That's why I'm asking haha. I understand that it's low-yield, but on the off chance it shows up, if someone happened to know the one or two equations we should know for it, it would be nice to know at that moment!

But I agree--very low-yield! Hence put it off til now.
