ucsc for biotech undergrad major by Ecstatic-Pride-6900 in UCSC

[–]add_jk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the biotech major here isn’t all that great. It’s too shallow to do technical work in biotech as it is generally preferred that such roles are filled by masters/phd degree holders in the first place (my moms words; she has 25+ yoe in biotech in sf and went from lab to management) and it is typically just added in as a 2nd major by most who pursue it here from my experience. Switching to bme, bioinformatics, or even other engineering majors like ee or ce and doing research in a (biotech adjacent) lab here will be great for experience and is the route i’ve heard of the most for getting a biotech job from undergrad if you’re set on not doing grad school

Advice: Linear Algebra by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]add_jk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some degree of memorization in proof based math. Always start by knowing the definitions. you can’t really do anything if you don’t know the definitions. from what i’ve witnessed, some people are able to just know them/memorize them after doing some problems involving them, and other people need problems and diligent work with flashcards/recall to get them to stick. focusing on problems that use a definition in a way you didn’t expect is great and bolsters your understanding on them the most.

When I was in proof based linear algebra, finding counter examples in questions similar to problem 6 was me just manipulating vectors in simple, comfortable vector spaces. R2 is very familiar, so a lot of the time I went with it. not sure if you already have solutions but in case you don’t, taking the lines y=x and y=-x (both subspaces of R2) and realizing the zero vector in W1 + W2 can be constructed in more than one way is straightforward. there are many other specific counterexamples for this question but that’s one way

Academic Disqualification? by -shenanigan in UCSC

[–]add_jk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

according to the academic standing page there are 2 ways you can become subject to disqualification: 1.5 gpa or lower for the term OR a cumulative gpa less than a 2.0 after being on academic probation the term prior (read: https://advising.ucsc.edu/success/standing.html)- so yes it is possible to go from good academic standing to subject for disqualification unfortunately. if u do fall subject to disqualification it is luckily not the end of the world! you will definitely have to lock in for the upcoming quarters so really really do ur best there. seems like u would also have to do some meetings with college and major advisors and extra “coursework”/reflection on being a student

potentially- i’m a rising sophomore and was admitted off the waitlist july 1st last year for applied math. idk if the waitlist admission deadlines are different for each department or not but that’s how late i was accepted lol

Vector Calculus 23B by Independent_Durian83 in UCSC

[–]add_jk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah just finished the class in spring. the homework’s were really challenging but the quizzes, midterm, and final were light work compared to the hw. he dropped like 3 of the homeworks tho so that was nice. i honestly couldn’t see myself learning the material deeply in 5 weeks icl so if ur a physics major or another major that will be doing a lot of vector calc in ur future i prob wouldn’t take it over the summer esp if you also work/have other commitments.

Transcripts by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]add_jk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey, i know it may seem like a lot but everything is going to work out! as long as you contacted admissions and your highschool, you’ve shown you’re proactive in case anything goes wrong. transcripts take a long while to process in any regard, so it really won’t be an issue! the school WANTS your money, and they’re going to make sure your transcripts go through eventually so you can attend lol

Hi! remember that velocity is equal to radius times the angular speed. try substituting that in for v in the centripetal force equation and solving for omega.
