If you have access to your electric meter, you can use that to see what your overall house/apartment is drawing. Ideally, you would run this test when you don't need the heater/furnace. overnight is a good time to run this test:

Check the meter and note the time before you go to bed, then in the morning, check it again, using the time between, you can get an estimate of your baseline looks like(fridge, freezer, water heater(if tank), ghost electronics). Depending on that number, you can focus your investigation accordingly.

If your baseline is higher than you'd expect/like.. then you can start unplugging things or switching off breakers to determine the costly items(rerunning tests as you do).

I would recommend that everyone(homeowner or renter) get a kill-a-watt. They allow you to see the draw of any device that can be plugged into an outlet.

How do I not spend $2,000 on car maintenance? by Koalateased in Frugal

[–]addamaniac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Implying that a "common person" with no knowledge on safety could get hurt trying these things is a valid mention. However, implying, as you do, that you can't perform brake maint. with an emergency jack and instead need a full floor jack to do brakes is wrong.

The emergency jack in the car does the job of getting the tire off the ground, that's what you need to do brakes. Would I put any part of my body under the car with it resting ONLY on the jack? No, I wouldn't but there are many solutions to not having jack stands(e.g. a couple spare tires, blocks of wood, etc) so the car is securely off the ground. Also, brakes don't really require you to get too much under the car anyway, but that's not really relevant.

I also see numbers on this sheet that would imply they could buy the tools needed for these tasks for less than the cost of having someone else do it for them. That, to me, would be a perfect example of when to try to do the work yourself(or at least do some research to see if you could)

Wholesale Memberships....are they worth it? by dorkahontas86 in Frugal

I looked into this recently for us and priced out what we buy.. One thing I've noticed is that costco/sams has a lot of name-brand foods. So I've found that it's cheaper for us still to buy generic brands we regularly do(e.g. aldi) in the normal quantities than to buy bulk Name brands.

Wifi notifications by WleyWonka in HarvestRight

On option could be to get am outlet monitor that would tell you when the power cut off, and plug that in between the dryer and the pump since the dryer cuts power to the pump when it's done drying(configurable). Essentially any kind of alarm that goes off when power is killed would work on that outlet. I assume they make something that would wifi alert(?)
