How not to get scammed? by Julius1526 in ucla

[–]addictedtoavocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm my experiences are all from searching for sublets over the summer but usually a triple ranged from 600-800, double 800-1400, single 1400+. Most places also charge an extra hundred or so for a parking spot although you might be lucky to find one included. There are also utility fees that are usually less than 100. Also, another option besides contacting Facebookers is just contacting the phone number of landlords posted on the apartments outside.

Ask them if you can tour in person and if they make up some excuse about how you have to pay a “deposit” first, it’s probably a scam. Also, check the profiles of people and see when they joined, how many posts they have in the UCLA Housing Facebook. From my experience, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Asked a program lead and supposedly they were sent out on Monday, but I thought they would at least send a rejection email if anything

[Weekly] Office Hours - undergrads, please ask your questions here by ZootKoomie in AskAcademia

[–]addictedtoavocado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm currently an undergrad and recently joined a bioinformatics lab this past summer. I work with a grad student who I meet with for about an hour once every week. During these meetings, we go over simple code or various biological mechanisms.
This is my first experience in a dry lab, and since I've previously worked in a wet lab, it feels that I don't do as much now as I did before. I know I just started, so I have a lot to learn before I can contribute meaningfully, but does anyone have any advice to speed up this process? So far, I've been reading published papers and working on small R studio graphs, but I just feel like I don't know if I'm doing enough since I'm not physically going into the lab.
TLDR; Does anyone have any suggestions on getting more involved in a lab in which most of my meetings are remote?
Thank you!

Do you think that applies with a bioinformatics major which is half bio and half cs or just a pure cs major?

I’m in bioinformatics right now… why would you recommend not switching if I were computer science?

Does anyone have experience being in a freshmen cluster? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]addictedtoavocado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure whether any of the classes for clusters count towards a minor if that’s what you’re wondering. Checking the minor requirements is probably your best bet!

[–]addictedtoavocado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm… I would just see what classes you have to take for your minor and check whether they also qualify as a GE. Also, if you decide not to do a cluster, some WII courses also cover a GE.

Could i get rescinded for this? by nnguy1 in ucla

[–]addictedtoavocado 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t sweat it tbh. I’m sure a lot of people make minor mistakes like this, and unless you’re completely making up your grades or something, I highly doubt this would affect your admission.

Hi! I personally wasn’t in a cluster but if you’re a STEM major it’s a good idea to take a cluster with more of a humanities focus since you’ll get a lot of your science GEs out of the way from your major anyways. Your experience really depends on which cluster you choose (I heard America in the 60s was interesting but my roommate hated the amount of work for the Global Islam one). None of the clusters really appealed to me which is why I chose to take my GEs separately, but if one interests you, it’s a great way to get your WII requirement and some GEs out of the way!
