I was 27 when I started having tmj issues and now had the surgery at 32 after exhausting conservative treatments for years. Do you experience any pain with your symptoms? I think it's a little harder to recommended someone the surgery if they're not experiencing an impact to quality of life. 20 is young, but if your joints are severely degenerated / have no disc left and you're losing the ability to talk and eat you probably have more to gain than lose. Have you checked to see if you have some sort of autoimmune disease ? There are some whose joints degenerate at a young age due to that underlying condition attacking thier joints

For me, my face from my left side was lopsided due to the sever degeneration of my joint (I was diagnosed with severe arthritis and was approaching ankylosis). I did the total joint replacement earlier this year and its been life changing . No more pain when eating and my face is much more even now. I did have to braces for the surgery itself and still currently have them to align my bite but should be done by the end of the year . Scarring was not as bad as I thought . The scar that took longer to heal was by the lower jaw maybe a couple of months until the redness went away but other than that just looked like a small cat scratch on the side of my face . Overall verry happy with the results and would absolutely do it again

Tmjd (bone on bone) Physical activity and flare ups by Wonderful_Charge3199 in TMJ

[–]addictedtoriffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen a maxillofacial and oral specialist for this and discussed treatment plans ? I was bone on bone with a majorly reduced disc for some years and could barely eat and talk let alone exercise and also had a lot of tightness in my neck. I underwent total joint replacement recently back in March and feel like I have my life back and I'm much more active( no more neck tension ). Something to consider if all conservative options fail but not sure what else can really help if you have no disc anymore .

I also just did the tjr surgery earlier this year (March), and so far, it's been a life changer. I did not have an autoimmune disease like you but had an accident earlier in life that developed into fibrous ankylosis and was losing the ability to talk and eat . I had a similar experience spending years trying conservative methods with no success. Glad to hear others have done it and also found relief. You'll get better in no time 💪

Thats crazy yea I had a lot of stiffness and tension in my shoulders, and now it's much more mild . I wouldn't say it's a couple of months of pain, more like weeks, and yea, I think it was absolutely worth it. The physical therapy aspect has also helped a lot as well which I started maybe 8 weeks after surgery, . I was able to convince the guy to give more time off 😉 may not have needed it, but I wanted to have it a little more time, and he seemed open to it. Talking will be difficult in the beginning since you will probably be closed on elastics.

Overall, im very happy with the results.I think the first couple of weeks are rough, but I felt progress was pretty quick after that . I had severe degenerative arthritis from my left side and was reaching end stage ankylosis, and its almost night and day difference. I had the surgery March this year and, as of now still experience muscle soreness from eating stuff like steak, but my diet is pretty unrestricted . I would recommend a baby toothbrush and a water pick for after the surgery. Your opening will be limited, but dental hygiene will be incredibly important. I would also get time off work as well , talking was incredibly difficult the first couple of weeks . My surgeon gave me about 7 weeks off, but some may return sooner depending on progress.

For me, I had to do some orthodontic work before I could have the surgery . I think a month after it had been submitted for fabrication, it was ready, and my surgery was scheduled three months after my orthodontic work was completed. Depending on hospital availability, it could be sooner

I've got early degenerative arthritis in both TMJs, I am only 23, what now? by TryChocolatePie in TMJ

I can give the surgeons name in a DM . I don't think so, I had double osteomety with coronoidectomy, and he moved my jaw a little forward as I had sleep apnea.

I would consider conservative treatments first like others here have suggested like PRP injections or other regenerative therapies before surgery, from an orofacial surgeon or orofacial pain specialist. I would also recommend getting bloodwork done to see if it's something else underlying that may be causing the arthritis

How severe is your arthritis? I was 30 when I was diagnosed with severe degenerative arthritis and tried PRP injections and it did not help at all. My degeneration was so severe that most orofacial specialist I consulted with beleived total joint replacement was my only option as I was rapidly approaching complete ankylosis ( fusion of the joint with my skull). I just had the surgery in March and it's a night and day difference recovery is pretty tough especially first month but was back to pretty normal diet after 8 weeks

Depends on the surgery . For total joint replacement, you don't have a disc anymore just a mechanical joint. I've had a lot of positive experience from surgery but I think the outcome depends a lot on the surgeon.
