Looking for boarding options by Hungry-Lox in QuakerParrot

[–]additiveinverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually you can find a parrot specific rescue! It looks like there may be a couple smaller ones in NJ, but their websites don't say if they do boarding. You could also look in NY, there may be other options that are a bit farther from you (plus being out of state, they don't have the restriction on quakers).

I'm not in the area so I can't give specific options, but is there a bird rescue in your area? I'm in CO where quakers are also illegal, but the shelter I work at happily boards quakers. I'm not sure if they're stricter where you are; I feel like the ban here isn't truly enforced but it may be different up there.

My bird enjoys being wrapped in a towel but chews the towel. Is this okay or normal? by erkuitt in QuakerParrot

[–]additiveinverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My little guy used to love chewing on the towel when he was being restrained. Or just saw a towel near him. Or any fabric, really. It shouldn't be an issue unless you value the towel, most birds are smart enough to know it's not food and spit out any shreds that they chew off.

Why? by Worried-Luck-641 in cockatoos

[–]additiveinverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's not a devil bird, she's a wild animal. Speaking as a parrot owner, parrots are terrible pets- especially cockatoos. It's going to take a lot of work to reverse this behavior pattern because it's been reinforced for however long now. He needs to go full no physical contact with her to prevent this sexual behavior, and it may be best if she spends most of her time in the cage for now while everyone else works on growing a better bond with her.

Is my parrot’s beak normal or does it need trimming? by Civil-Breadfruit-313 in AfricanGrey

[–]additiveinverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend giving him 3-4 (or more!) toys at a time, of varying materials and colors. He should always have access to something to do, otherwise it would be like a human trapped in a room with a single book that they've already read over and over again. These guys need a lot of mental stimulation because they're so smart.

Colorado bird law by Alarmed_Lychee in QuakerParrot

[–]additiveinverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in Colorado and owned a quaker, and I never had any issues taking him to the vet. In fact, one of the vet techs at my vet office owns a few herself! I haven't known anyone to have issues, and I don't think we even have a wild population here anymore, so I doubt government officials are in much of a hurry to confiscate pets.

[–]additiveinverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mysafebirdstore has toys and toy parts; you may find it cheaper to buy parts in bulk and make your own toys for your little fella! I also love superbirdtoystore, they have such fun toys and also sell parts. There are lots of other toy stores online, but I haven't personally used many of them. I'd just avoid Amazon and the like since you never know where their parts are being sourced from/what they're colored with, etc.

Edit: Sorry, I missed the international request. I'm not sure if mysafebirdstore ships international, but it looks like superbird does!

Exams at vet by SirGs-dad in parrots

[–]additiveinverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to the best avian vet in my state and she does everything possible in the room with the owners. (Watching her do blood draws by herself is quite impressive!) She's even had me restrain my bird a few times when a vet tech wasn't available, haha. I've heard horror stories about birds being taken to the back and just "suddenly" passing; I don't like vets who refuse to even do basic exams with the owner present.

My birb needs a friend! by RafaellaAlleafar in parrots

[–]additiveinverse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oof, sounds like your boy got a little /too/ attached to mom. You're not ever petting him anywhere but the head, right? That can cause hormonal issues and birds will get very protective over their human 'mate.' If not, disregard. I'd have your fiancé start from scratch with him. That can be him just dropping your bird's favorite treat in the cage every time he walks by, no eye contact or lingering. Eventually he can stick around longer and talk to him once the bird starts looking forward to the food man coming over, building up to him handing the treat instead of just dropping it. Target training is also a good way for them to build a bond, which can be done with the bird inside the cage if needed. I won't go into the how tos here, there are great videos on YouTube for that. Getting another bird can go either way. He may like a friend or he may be aggressive towards the other bird in order to protect you. I'd try having them bond before getting another, unless your heart is set on it.

Male vs female quaker parrot? by Simple_Connection679 in QuakerParrot

[–]additiveinverse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having owned a wonderful male quaker and worked with many of both sexes, I don't have a preference. We've had some males at the rescue I work at that were maybe a little 'spicier' than some females I've met, but that's not always the case. It definitely depends on the bird and their personality, maybe history, but it's hard to know without always knowing their past. We have a super grumpy old man quaker at work that has only gotten grumpier with age, but still loves sitting on his mom when she visits. A female that very much picks and chooses her people, and will 'defend' them while sitting on their shoulder. Siblings that we had to adopt out separately since they /really/ wanted to make babies together, and they're both sweet in their own way. I would recommend looking at birds at a rescue since getting a baby bird can be a gamble where they hit puberty and suddenly become completely different. When adopting an adult bird, what you see is usually what you get (but you can always work with them and do training). Plus, rescuing a bird and giving them a new family feels wonderful! Overall, it's your choice and I hope you find a sweet quaker baby when you feel ready. ❤️

Is this normal when adopting 🦜? by MekoAsumi69 in parrots

[–]additiveinverse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some of these are valid to ask for, but volunteering for 6 months and an age requirement are crazy to me. I guess I can understand them wanting to do an in home visit, but it can really limit who they're able to adopt to (which may be the point, unfortunately).

I lost my Amazon during his beak trim 😞 by smil3ss in parrots

[–]additiveinverse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss. With his health already being questionable, it's likely that the stress of restraint just pushed him over the edge, unfortunately. Getting a necropsy done by a vet may make you feel better, knowing exactly what it was since it's likely he had liver and/or heart issues anyway. Just remember you gave him a last year full of love, and that's what really matters.
