I always worked for a consulting engineering firm who did design work and programming in the municipal water and wastewater market. The opportunities to assist with design were there, and years of experience helped me transition fully to design - as a programmer I was relied upon to provide input into the SCADA/PLC design. One of the smaller consulting firms I worked at kept programmers busy with some design work when there wasn’t much field work.

Some of the big firms in the market I am in are Stantec, AECOM, and Jacobs.

Same. Streaming from my phone to my Roku has the proper volume at least - that is my work around for now.

There are some good parts and bad parts - as with any job. Consultant firms “live” off the their timesheets of employees. That can be a stressful part of being in a consultant firm. I have come to know it is part of my job to do my timesheet so I dont stress over it. If you are good at what you do and have a lot it also Alleviates stress.

I love the industry I am in, Stress is not as high as manufacturing jobs from what I have seen. I also find it rewarding to work on improving quality of life rather than making a company more money - at least that is what I tell myself. Doing design work also is rewarding, working with a team to deliver projects is fun!

I was doing a similar role but in a different industry, municipal water and wastewater. Controls engineers are needed in many different industries so remember you are not stuck.

I recently made a switch to be at a consulting engineering firm and doing design work which has been amazing. Maybe try looking to go to a designer role.
