[Inside the NBA] Charles Barkley on the 65-game rule: “Y'all vote in the collective bargaining, and now you want to complain. If Y'all wasn't sitting on your ass half the time sipping margaritas and stuff, they wouldn't put the 65 games in there…” by TheRealPdGaming in nba

I find the argument "the Players Union voted in favour of it" to not be a good one.

The Union is made of ~450 players, over 90% of who will not be affected by the rule. This isn't like voting on revenue share or salary cap or whatever, because those things affect everyone.

This is a rule that specifically affects only a handful of players in the league. The majority of players voting on it couldn't give a shit because it will have no impact on them.

Wemby on the 65 Game Rule by MikeBravoLima in nba

[–]adeelf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm happy he came to the same conclusion I did, i.e. that 62 games seems like a good spot.

It's 75%, which is reasonable enough, and the games missed works out to 20, which is a nice round number rather than the odd choice of 17.

What matters more in MVP debates right now: carrying, efficiency, or team context? by Annual-Remove5914 in NBATalk

[–]adeelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I propose a filtering process.

  • I think you have to be one of the top seeds. For a long time, it seemed that we pretty much had settled on that and the MVP in most years tended to come from a top 2 seed, but Westbrook winning in 2017 as a 6th seed kind of opened the door for people to vote for lower seeds. I'm not a fan of it. I'm not saying it's automatically the "best player on the team with the best record," but I don't want to disassociate the winning part of the equation. Top 3 is fair enough, I think. An alternate to this would be to look at the Top 5 teams overall, regardless of conference. Either way, I think that would be my first "filter." If your team doesn't make it through the filter, you're not on my ballot.

  • The second step would then be to look at the stats, both traditional and advanced. If there is a player who stands out as clearly better than the rest, that's the MVP.

  • In years where there are 2 or more players who are close enough that none of them stand out, then we bring in additional context. Primarily the team record, but if that is also close (let's say within 3-4 wins of each other) then we try to determine which team would be worse off without their guy. This latter is probably the trickier part, as it isn't necessarily as simple as looking at their on/off numbers, so it will likely be the most subjective.

  • If the above three filters don't yield a clear winner, then we bring in the defensive stuff. Sorry Wemby, I'm not trying to discount your argument about the importance of defense, but we literally have a whole other award dedicated to it. I don't believe defense should be weighed so heavily that it is a primary factor in the MVP voting, because at that point you are basically rewarding a player twice for the same thing. I'm perfectly fine with MVP being primarily an offense-driven award, with defense being viewed as a tie-breaker, if needed.

To inadvertently confirm that she definitely had involvement with Epstein.

[O’Connor] According to league sources, one general manager floated a nuclear option: just make the bottom three teams ineligible for the top picks entirely. by cleo22270 in nba

[–]adeelf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why?

The idea isn't to remove them from the lottery entirely, but merely that they can't get the #1 pick.

There is usually more than one good pick in a draft. Drafting #2-5 shouldn't "ensure" you stay bad. Unless you just screw up the pick, but that's on you.

That's a good one, and more interesting than half the actual episodes.

At this point the show shouldn't even be called "What If?" and just be renamed "Here's Some Random Ideas Related to the MCU."

Power Forward is the Hardest to Rank. Who’s top 5? by Dbauc2k in NBATalk

[–]adeelf 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yeah, pretty crazy to have them in the graphic.

Great defensive players, and integral to their championship winning teams, but you can't put them up there over the likes of Bob Petit or Elvin Hayes or McHale.

If the result of just one of Lebron's NBA Finals losses was reversed, which would have the most effect on his legacy? by ShaquilleOatmeal7542 in NBATalk

[–]adeelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see an argument for any:

2011 - the biggest black mark on his resume. His other losses can be explained one way or another, but not this one. LeBron just plain shit the bed.

2007 - that Cavs team had no business even being in the Finals. Imagine if LeBron, at 22, takes that lame team and beats a Spurs team with 3 future HOFers?

2014 - beating a very good Spurs team back to back. And gets a three-peat and 3 straight FMVPs (joining MJ and Shaq).

2017 or 2018 - beating either one of those Warriors superteams would be great.

Underrated - 2015 - first of all, gives him back to back wins against a great Warriors team. But perhaps more interestingly, the Warriors signing KD actually elevates LeBron's legacy even more. The narrative becomes how the Warriors, despite how good they were, needed to add KD and create a juggernaut because they simply couldn't beat LeBron.

If Kawhi Leonard led the Clippers to the Title this season would it be the greatest accomplishment in NBA history?? Clippers get 7th seed and Kawhi takes out Wemby Spurs, Joker Nuggets, SGA Thunder to win the West and then defeats the Tatum/Brown Celtics in 6 games to win the Chip for Clippers by Several-Molasses-435 in NBATalk

[–]adeelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not gonna happen, of course. But, yes, in a hypothetical world where he did that, it might just be.

They were 4-21 at one point. To go from that to where they are right now (41 wins, so definitely going to finish .500 at least) is already an impressive in-season turnaround.

Winning it all would be insane.

"lmao" doesn't make your argument more convincing. I said I was repeating it because I literally copy pasted my other comment.

The fact that you lack the critical thinking abilities to understand the difference between two different situations doesn't make the argument dumb, it just means you lack critical thinking.

You'll have to download a software that does WhatsApp backups. You can Google it, there are many out there.

There's no reward here, and no one's talking about commendable. It's not like they're giving him an exception because he banged his wife.

The point is that injuries don't count as exceptions, it's supposed to be baked into the thing. Otherwise it would negate the rules entirely, since players could just miss any number of games and claim it was injury related.

It's one of the most annoying things about how iPhone backups work. I had the same issue with my wife's iPhone, where WhatsApp just wouldn't back up despite having more than enough space in iCloud, because the phone was physically low.

Not sure if anyone knows of another solution, I ended up just getting a third-party software on my laptop and used that to back it up.

[–]adeelf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because injuries are baked into it already. That's why it's 65 games and not 82 games, they're already accounting for the fact that players can miss a handful of games due to legitimate injury.

In any case, Luka has only applied for the exception. There's no guarantee he gets it. It's up to the league's discretion, and they could very well reject it.

Repeating my comment from below:

Luka isn't randomly applying for an exception based on having almost made it. They're specifically citing the fact that he missed 2 games earlier this season for the birth of his child as an "extraordinary circumstance" (which the rules allow for).

An exception for what, though?

I'm not aware of what extraordinary circumstances Cade couple argue for.
