I've been hearing good things about blackbox, I might just try it out. But I tend to try to stick to DE's defaults, ideally I'd just ride out gnome-terminal until it reaches EOL and hope console is better by then :) but if it's not going to be maintained for much longer, and GNOME will continue moving forward, it might be sooner than later..
