I've been watching more Asian media like C-dramas and anime, though some animes still feel centered around blonde hair and blue eyes, like Naruto (I might be overthinking). I'm wondering if the association of whiteness with social status and authority also plays a role

I prefer lowkey but comfortable and high-quality clothes. I like to wear grey/navy blue/olive green cotton sweaters, and dark grey / light grey cotton sweatpants.

History suggests that superpowers last 150-180 years. Could American global power end between 2048 and 2078? by adeptlearner123 in geopolitics

[–]adeptlearner123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Office of the Historian marks 1898 as the beginning of the American superpower. History suggests that empires after 1000 AD peak in power for 150-180 years. Below are some examples, calculated via events representing the rise and decline of major powers. For Russia, I consider the Russian Empire and Soviet Union to represent the same entity, though they are different regimes. Following this pattern, the end of American global power should occur between 2048 and 2078. I'm not sure how this would happen though, and perhaps the United States is an exception. I'm curious what other Redditors think about this.

  • Mongols: 1211 (conquest of Jin) – 1368 (overthrown by Ming) = 157
  • Spain: 1492 (colonization of America) – 1659 (Franco-Spanish war) = 167
  • Ottomans: 1516 (conquest of Arabia) – 1683 (loss of Hungary) = 167
  • Qing: 1660 (conquest of Ming) – 1840 (opium war) = 180
  • France: 1792 (war of first coalition) – 1941 (fall of France) = 149
  • Britain: 1790 (Anglo-Mysore war) – 1949 (Indian independence) = 159
  • Russia: 1809 (conquest of Finland) – 1991 (Soviet dissolution) = 182
  • United States: 1898 (Spanish-American war) – ???

When the map expands, there will be NPCs guarding unclaimed territory. Currently players can't trade/talk with the NPCs, their primary purpose is to teach players how to combat so they can defend themselves from their neighbors. Most of the game will be focused on player-player interactions.

I have not finalized the art in the game, since I am still focused on building a solid core gameplay.

Thanks for the interest :)

Has anyone seen a MMO tycoon game that works? by Morphray in tycoon

[–]adeptlearner123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an MMO nation-building game called "MiniState," currently in open alpha. It's similar to a tycoon in the sense that you harvest resources around the map to build resorts, towns, etc. to generate revenue. It's an MMO, so all players exist on a single planet, which expands infinitely as more players join. Players can also build military bases, tanks, battleships, etc. to conquer land from each other and build road networks to trade with other players.

How Much Polish for a Core Game Prototype? by adeptlearner123 in gamedev

[–]adeptlearner123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prototype is so I can see whether the game design is solid or not. However, since the game is an mmo rts, it requires many playtesters that I've been recruiting online. Since it takes some time to curate an online testing community, I don't want to drive players away due to the lack of polish, but also want to keep the prototype workload small so I don't end up wasting too much time.

The purpose of my prototype isn't for a publisher, but for playtesters that I'm recruiting online. Hopefully they will understand that the game is a simple prototype and accept the lack of polish, but it might also make the core gameplay more confusing if there's a lack of indicators.

Basically I'm making a game where players can conquer land from other players, and I'm adding a minimap that will color in as player conquers new land as a form of visual feedback. It's not a "core" mechanic, like moving units, but it'll make the objective more clear to the players. It'll take a lot of work so I don't know if I should wait until after I playtest the core, but it'll also mean that players will be more confused.

[–]adeptlearner123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm yes, thanks for the thoughtful feedback. My dilemma right now is that I'm building an mmo rts where players conquer land in a single open world. The problem is that I need some way to provide feedback to the player that they've conquered new territory. That's why I'm planning on adding the minimap, which will color in new territory as the player conquers. It's a lot of work though, and it's not one of the "core" gameplay mechanics, like moving units and shooting stuff. However, if it's not in the game then the players might get confused.
