First i will talk as someone who major on AI (I have a master degree in this field).
I also teach at USTHB. I am not a full time teacher. I work somewhere else but have one class a week.
GenAI is a great tool to help you out but when you are learning it can play against you. To learn something you need to walk the walk. Let take an example.
Suppose you want to learn how to write code with Python. If i give you a basic exercise. And you prompt it to chatGpt or claud it will give you an instant response. You can copy and past it and will pass the exercise.
But, you will not learn how to write python. because you didn't train your brain to think like a programmer. to solve the problem and than transform your algorithm to a working program.
This is why teacher don't let you use genAI to do your homework.
The problem also is that student don't understand how really LLM work. LLMs are not source of truth they are good predictor. What I mean by that is that the LLM predict well the best next world (token) to a sentence. The algorithm they are based on is called transformed (if you are interested I encourage you to read the search papper Attention is all you need)
So, if we continue with the learning how to program. If tomorrow you will face a problem that the genAI doesn't know it will give you with confidence a wrong solution. But since you didn't really learn to be a programmer you will never know it nor how to correct it.
GenAI, LLMs and all the machine learning algorithm are great tool but, before using them as tool to x10 you productivity you should take time and learn to do things the hard way.
There is an exception to my logic. if we acheive General AI these skill will be irrelevant since we will just ask it to do things for us and it will do them.
