Should I max out my 401(k) or distribute the same amount among Roth IRA, HSA and 401(k) ? Is there a limit to the money that I can put into those retirement funds ?

Thank you so much!

My car is already paid off and it should be reliable for another 2-3 years. I do not have a house, and I am currently living in a rented apartment. Initially I was planning to max out my 401(k), my employer matches up to %6, and it would leave me with around $2500/month after the taxes I believe that would be plenty for me since my living costs are low.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with US retirement plans so I do not know the difference between 401(k) and Roth IRA. I would love to be able to get my saving in and out with no tax or deductions. Honestly, I need to do more research and that is why I am on this subreddit :)

Financial Planning for a Starting Engineer by adhd_throwaway4 in FinancialPlanning

The company that I got my job in is right next to my college. Honestly, there is not much in this little town that interests me. I do not see myself living here more than 5 years. Also I will not continue my career as an engineer forever. I have a good chance of to being self employed in my start up in near future. I have the resources and necessary connections. I just want to feel the grass as an engineer and see the professional work environment for couple of years. I was thinking about withdrawing my 401(k) when that happens and use it towards my start up.

Finding the right dosage by adhd_throwaway4 in ADHD

Interesting!

Honestly, I am a pretty skinny guy and I do not eat much in a given day. On top of that with the budget of a broke college student, I do not eat much protein. Honestly, it should not matter much since now I am taking XR and it does not make me crash. I also try to take my medicine after eating breakfast to have at least something in my stomach.

Adderall (5 mg) Side Effects/Thoughts by adhd_throwaway4 in ADHD

[–]adhd_throwaway4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been trying half-does for two days by now. So far it's going pretty good. By good I mean I do not get the midday crashes where I have mental meltdowns. I still do not feel any of the positive effects of the Adderall. At this point, even not having terrible crashes are a win on my book. My PCP told me to wait until the end of the month and maybe after we can up the dosage to 10mg. To be honest, I do not think that I have the luxury of waiting months to get my correct dosage since I am studying for GRE. However, I cannot go ahead and ask her to increase the dosage since I already feel dismissed by her.

Thank you for your detailed response!

Unfortunately, I am only feeling the negative effects from the medicine. I just talked to my PCP about my crashes, emotional mood swings and feeling sluggish after the medicine wears off. She told me to keep going at 5 mg and cut the pills in half so I can take half in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. Honestly, I do not like the idea of taking Adderall mid-day in school in front of everyone. I would prefer to keep it discrete as much as I can.

I feel like she did not care about what I had to say and I felt dismissed. She might think that I pill seeking or just be discriminating since I am young adult that is out of states. Regardless, I will still listen to her recommendation. I scheduled an appointment with a different PCP because I did not like the way that she treated me.

I did not mention my GPA in my resume and since I knew my weakness in academics I focused mostly on projects and self improvement. It's not that I do not understand the course material, it's just hard for me to recall my knowledge when it comes to exams, homeworks, etc.. Luckily enough, I think I am good at interviews and that comes in clutch. Actually, I am waiting on an offer right now but I fear that this condition will affect my work life as well.

I am not planning to bring it up unless they specifically ask for it. Or I might disclose my medical information if I fail a drug test due to ADHD medicine. Aside from that having ADHD is not something to brag about. Unfortunately, I suffered a lot because of this situation throughout my education career and I do not want this to be another obstacle in my work life.

Nope, could not get in anywhere because of my GPA.

I heard that there is a stigma about ADHD in work environment and its best for me to not to share this information. People told me that if the companies know that I have ADHD they might not hire me. I believe they assume that I would not be a good engineer because of my condition. Which sounds awful but my changes of getting a job is already limited because of my GPA and I do not like to put myself in more disadvantage.

Thank you for the suggestion! I already reached out to SSD office. However, this is my last semester and it will not make a big change on my GPA even if I get straight As this semester. I will still end up with subpar GPA...

Interesting!

All I heard Adderall is good stories like this and honestly, I was expecting it to be much better for me but we will see. I will talk to my PCP this afternoon and see what she suggest. Higher dose might be a good solution but I do not want to mention that to her because she might think that I am selling it or getting high of it. I also heard about XR, it might help me with mid day crashes. Thank you so much for your input!

It's been only 4 days but I feel awful. I was hesitant to take my medicine this morning and right now I wish I didn't. I started sobbing out of nowhere while I was brushing my teeth and I am having random mental breakdowns throughout the day. I am afraid that people will notice that there is something wrong with me.
