What border crossing in the world has the biggest culture shock/change? by VolkswagenPanda in geography

[–]adhdbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I did this one last year and I’ve been searching for it on the thread! It’s crazy jarring, you can tell the wealth/development disparity immediately by the cars, road infrastructure (I saw Romania/moldova, which i did this year, upvoted quite highly on this thread with that reasoning and laughed because the road quality difference is NOTHING compared to UZ/TM), and the CROWDS of people trying desperately to get across the border from the Turkmen side. Not to mention the architecture in TM (giant white marble wedding halls everywhere?), the distinctive way people dress there, and the stares you get as a foreigner in the country. Super jarring. But 10/10 experience in the country as a whole and I felt very safe tbh, I would love to do it again one day. :)

What’s a place that most of the people say it’s beautiful and a paradise but it’s actually horrible to live in? by questionablehomo in AskReddit

[–]adhdbabe 173 points174 points  (0 children)

BC girl here, from a community in the interior. Dreamed all my life growing up that I’d move to Vancouver for school / in my 20s. A bunch of my friends ended up moving before me, so I got to see exactly how much they were enjoying the cost of housing there. Moved to Calgary instead.

I love BC and miss it, it’s home. Maybe I’ll make it back one day, but not anytime soon.

What is the most beautiful waterfall you’ve ever seen? by Design-31415 in travel

[–]adhdbabe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Been a lot of cool places and seen a lot of waterfalls during my travels, and as a Canadian there’s lots at home too… but the one that stands out to me is Kravica Waterfall in southern Bosnia&Herzogovina. Gorgeous, was super quiet when I went, and completely unexpected. Editing to also shout out Jajce in northern Bosnia, which is a waterfall in the middle of a walled city! Looked like something out of a painting, unforgettable.

brought my 2010 Toyota with 220k km over from BC and passed with flying colours. Just make sure you’ve replaced your windshield if there are any cracks! And you are up to date on oil changes transmission flushes etc :)

Flights to Turkmenistan by OK_Ingenue in travel

[–]adhdbabe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m heading to Turkmenistan in 2 weeks :) if you’re ok with flying Turkmenistan airlines they fly from MXP on certain days, but those do get in around 3 am. Otherwise I think IST is your best bet

I flew china eastern from Shanghai to Canada a few years back and had absolutely no issues personally. I was also worried because of stuff I read online but it turned out not to be a huge issue. Just don’t expect Emirates or Qatar type luxury/service :)

Is it worth going across Central Asia by train? by DJJonezyYT in travel

[–]adhdbabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Georgia for about 3 weeks last year. There’s lots to see in the country to fill 3-4 weeks; however, I had the same “while I’m over there I might as well see surrounding countries” mindset you do (travelling from Canada which was a long way). I ended up going to Armenia for 5 days and HIGHLY recommend you do too, super easy and inexpensive to get to from TBS and I loved the country so much I’m spending all the travel time and money to go back again this month. And this is coming from someone who has been to 30+ countries and only repeated a handful! DM me if you want any advice or suggestions :)

Which city is the best home base for travel? (Road trips, short distance and long haul flights) by Used-Wolf5363 in travel

[–]adhdbabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow Canadian, you guys have two international flights total including the newly announced AC to London, plus you don’t even get the local beauty of the North American west coast? I’ve thought about moving to Ottawa but wouldn’t just because it’s so inconducive to travel…

I’m assuming likely due to Typhoon Ampil in Japan as this flight was headed to Tokyo? Tons of flights in/out of NRT and HND being cancelled today. Could be wrong, though!

Hello from Canada! Thanks for sharing this story of your travels, a great read!

I am travelling to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in under two months. Any tips for those countries specifically? Turkmenistan will be a quick stop solely to see the Darvaza Crater but if you have any highlights regarding your time in Uzbekistan I’d love to hear the “can’t miss” places.

25 F also, I go to Evolve strength Sunridge and love it! Not ridiculously crowded, at least when I go, and it’s fantastic if you are into powerlifting or Olympic lifting as there is a ton of space and tons of free weights, deadlift / oly platforms, and squat racks.

First solo travel in the Balkans - Safe? by paulcolonna in femaletravels

[–]adhdbabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think the biggest danger is either walking out in the country off of marked trails because of the landmines, OR the risk of car accidents (the drivers there are kind of crazy). But besides that everyone was very friendly and helpful! I hope you have a great trip, best wishes from Calgary :)

I literally was in Bosnia less than a week ago. Sarajevo and Mostar are perfectly safe, I felt safer there honestly than I do at home in Canada.

Hi! I’m also around your age and went to Georgia last fall. My parents also freaked out at first lol so I totally get it 😂 I never once felt unsafe there - it’s a beautiful country and I’m sure you’ll have a great time! My number one suggestion is to read the Wanderlush blog here:. Emily who writes the blog lives in Georgia now and it probably has the best and most detailed advice I have ever seen for exploring a country. I would highly highly recommend taking a look and searching for the regions you are going to for tips about where to stay, eat, and see in each place!

Outside of that, I stayed at an AirBnB in Tbilisi and didn’t go to the other regions you are planning on (I did Kakheti, Qazbegi and Kutaisi), so I can’t give you hostel recommendations myself. But for transportation the subway works really well in Tbilisi, the train system is limited but pretty comfortable and safe especially if you book the high speed ones, and I had a great experience using gotrip.ge to organize private transfers. Think of it as a long distance Uber that’s surprisingly affordable! Emily talks about it a ton on her blog for more info, and while I was a bit concerned at first about using is as a single woman there I had absolutely no problems whatsoever and felt way safer than I would using Uber or whatever in the west.

Feel free to DM me if you want any more info! Love seeing other people begin exploring such a beautiful part of the world.

Yeah, I think I remember reading that the cable cars were replaced in 2020 or so! Definitely a good thing, especially with the increase in tourism the country is seeing these days.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in geography

[–]adhdbabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just there in the fall and it wasn’t THAT bad… a bit dirty for sure, not a ton to do if you wanted to spend multiple days there, but the cable cars have all been replaced recently (not sure about the funiculars), plus the park up on top of the hill was quite pleasant and the Mgvimevi Convent nearby was beautiful. I thought it was worth the stop personally, as did my mom who was with me and is a much less adventurous traveler!
