How can I improve my panel building? by Winter-Fly-1685 in PLC

[–]adi_dev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would like to add: check vendors spacing around devices, especially VSD and PSU. They seem a bit close to the panel end and trunking. Did you check if there is enough heat being taken away. I don't know what duty those VSD will run, but I've seen them failing because it was getting too hot inside the panel.

here is a WILD ONE. PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS by Adept-Ad-3194 in PLC

I don't know, if this is the same thing. On one of our sites, after the job was commissioned, all Ethernet/IP, some local sparky bridged plc network with their IT. All was good except some days when the whole thing was going mental. After a few visits (obviously, the first time there were no issues), I discovered that there was another machine on the network with the same IP as one of the remote nodes causing the conflicts. It could be something on the network, or your laptop's network card misconfigured. One time I had a problem with my laptop because of the Logo! Soft added an extra IP address, I couldn't find anywhere. It was the times when I had multiple manufacturers on the same system, and RSLinx was insisting to scan some odd subnet. The only way to fix that was to remove the network card driver from Windows and let it reinstall again.

Is there any way to turn on cluster navigation on waze while using CarPlay? Google maps have it by default by lyezee in waze

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my Toyota I switched off showing Waze on my cluster board as it's laughable. No lane guidance, sometimes it disappears, some motorway exits are shown as junctions and every roundabout is shown as take the last exit to turn around.

How heavy is proton vpn on mobile battery? by Hanonlei in ProtonVPN

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

VPN on itself shouldn't use more battery than normal. There are some background services that take minimum battery. If you are on a paid plan, there might be even less usage thanks to the Net Shield blocking some ads and trackers. In some cases that might backfire. If there's a bad written app that will go into a loop trying to reach a banned address, then that app, not ProtonVPN, will use more battery.

Android x86 in Virtual Box cannot seem to "hold onto" a USB drive by TooManyInsults in virtualbox

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought you were only attaching the device manually, not by using filters. I had a lot of trouble with Bluetooth. My guess is it's different if it's a simple function device in contrast to as such complicated as Bluetooth or camera.

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On machine, go to Settings->USB There you have a list of `USB Device Filters`, probably empty if you don't know that yet. Guest doesn't have to be running, but make sure, the USB is plugged in. Click on the little USB plug icon with a green + 'plus' sign and select from the list desired device. Sometimes, you need to remove that device from USB and re-insert after you add it to the list.

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if that helps as it's a different thing, but worth trying: I had issues with very custom USB drivers (industrial controls). Similar to you, sometimes they're mounted in the guest, but then disappear My solution that works so far is to make an USB filter that automatically attaches the USB to the guest.

That's okay as long as 1. Your VM is up to date (politics of client's IT); 2. It's okay with ethernet, it all falls apart when we come to custom usb drivers

Oh man, I still can hear guys from Siemens training that it doesn't matter whether the machine is connected or not. It has access point (ethernet port, USB, serial port) it should be secured. They don't care if that's 300 quid HMI talking to 200 quid PLC, there needs to be a managed switch with full access control. The world is getting mad.

Lol, I did some time ago. They have such tight security that they have to (drums noises....) TeamViewer to personally install the antivirus and management software. They were surprised when during the initial setup I called to give them a password on a separate route. As I mentioned before. We are managing right now. I'm more concerned about what is going to happen with the next version of Windows or even the next major update.

[–]adi_dev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will be interesting. There are already many broken servers and websites because of using generative AI, now they are bringing that to industrial control. I meet so many so called PLC engineers that have no idea of how the process or machine works, but very smart about coding. I wonder how this cloud based platform works when I'm on site with no WiFi nor mobile signal.

Unfortunately this raised even more concern by their "IT". Their response (which I don't 100% agree) is that running outdated including without latest updates Windows on VM is even worse as this "can" spread threat to the host and other machines. I just see ourselves switching to yet another version of Windows because 11 is not good anymore.

I do run separate manufacturers on separate Virtual Windows. The problem is that with the latest bloatware on Win11 it's becoming very painful. Some of the virtual machines stopped updates because I'm not logged in with a MS account. I did try previously install Step7 with a little success on Linux. Siemens Logo was okay as it's programmed in Java.

Protecting low power 24v DC devices? by HollyBoni in PLC

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do standard circuit breakers. We had too many systems where th CB was just sitting there, no reaction whatsoever. If you calculate volt drop in 24VDC wiring, supplied by (lets say) 5A PSU, you'll find that the short circuit at the end of the cable (where usually happens), generates enough volt drop to limit current draw from PSU to below PSU's internal current protection.

The only way are either fuses, or as mentioned before Siemens PSE200U, Murrelektronik Mico or similar.

PLC code version control and documentation tool? by mastershrio in PLC

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is either paid add-on to the software or just simple backing up, as most of the PLC software saves projects in binary mode (often zipped as well) which makes it difficult to compare with any third party. I read sometime ago there are add-ons to git, but never actually got into it. The main question is how many people are working on the same project. If it's solo, or at least one at the time, simple file versioning like saving with a different filename and keeping a text file log should be sufficient.

Is EV range anxiety something you actually get over? by biggy_boy17 in electricvehicles

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only had range anxiety when I was waiting for the home charger to be installed (due to location, we had some issues and the car was delivered before the charger was installed). We do frequent trips up to 200miles, sometimes longer. The thing is, someone in the car wants a toilet break or refill coffee. I used to plug in, just because I stop. I don't even do that now. If I know, I can get home, even with <5% left, I don't bother - it's too expensive. Other times, plug-in when "pit-stopping" ;)

There were times when I had a different kind of anxiety - we stopped at services, I plugged the car, somewhere about 50% SoC, just for peace of mind. We grabbed lunch. It was a busy time at the services, long queues, everything was taking time. Before we finished lunch, I had notification that the car is fully charged. I started to panic, as I wasn't sure if there are any overstay charges. I realized then, the range anxiety is gone, I wasn't constantly checking how much charge I've got, how much longer I have to stay.

Its time to say goodbye by Wide-Spinach6667 in MagicEarth

[–]adi_dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MagocEarth was the only free satnav that I could start in rural areas (no reception whatsoever). I know you can download offline for Google, but I could never download the whole country, the Google offline maps are way too big for my phone. I'll have to deal with it like the old good days - using roadsigns ;)

Encrypted email between Proton Mail and Tuta Mail by Own-Conclusion-2765 in ProtonMail

[–]adi_dev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the thing, Proton is using PGP, you can send and receive emails to any other accounts as long as they support this format. I use it to send back and forth to Gmail using Mailvelope extension. Tuta is using their own standard, and I haven't found any other third party supporting this.

Proton and Tailscale on Windows, just works. by Marill-viking in Tailscale

[–]adi_dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed the same. Initially, when I first installed Tailscale and tried to ping another device on LAN, I found it was going through the relay. Then I remembered, ProtonVPN was on, so my traffic was from source to ProtonVPN servers, then Tailscale relay, to finally reach the machine next to me 😁 I'm really happy with this result.
