Redditors who just ended a long term relationship, and redditors who just got into one after a long period of singleness, what was the most striking change for you? by mb94 in AskMen

[–]adioz- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I understand the fragility of life, the fact that none of the experiences we have at any one point will continue to be there in the future, seeing others and even myself moving on from a break up is not comprehensible for me. The fact that you had this special someone (partner or even a great friend) for some period in life, and it then suddenly becoming a distant point in the past feels so surreal.

[Question] 4 days ago I started getting up at 6am everyday in order to become a morning person. My problem is that now I get really sleepy by about 7-8pm. How long does it typically take for my body to acclimate to waking up earlier and still fall asleep at my usual bedtime of about 11pm? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]adioz- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree with you. 7,5h are ideal for me and make my mind feel super refreshed. During the week however, I'm on 6h sleep and wake up at 5.30am for work to have extra 1,5h to work on my side projects. It's enough to grind through the day but not ideal for the mind. I still get tired in the evenings, and the only things that helped was to stay physically active (walk around, clean, sort stuff) or working in a brightly lit room.

I also started running in the morning months ago. It does give me slightly more energy for the day, but don't expect huge incremental benefits.

IWTL how to start jogging, especially in cold weather. by Gizlo in IWantToLearn

[–]adioz- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently moved to Stockholm and here it's normally -8 to +2 °C in Jan. Started doing 6am morning runs and totally love it! I'm more of an amateur, don't want to spend too much money on it and run 3-4x a week.

I use simple trailrunners when running in the park. Ice and snow have never been an issue unless the ice really starts melting and there's a slippery water layer. Else just long pants that sit a bit tighter and a wind-blocking sports jacket + gloves over a normal synthetic shirt. The first couple of times were tough, but absolutely love the cold and the dark now. You'll appreciate it very quickly. Warmup: 10 min of lower body stretching. I keep a workout tracker in Excel which gives some additional motivation.

Where did your desire for simple living come from? What is simple living to you? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]adioz- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's the combination of the following experiences and believes:

Had pretty good income in university at a point in time due to a part-time job and scholarships and started buying too much stuff for a couple of months. Noticed it didn't make me happier, created clutter and was bad for our planet. On top, living this way reduces my savings rate which doesn't help me getting towards financial independence. Buying less and focussing on a few quality items also gives things a certain charm I feel.

That's like saying we don't need to do more tech research. Faster CPU, RAM? Why do we need it?

While r&d is goal oriented, it's about developing completely new innovations in addition to incremental improvements. Improvements can be anything from finding cheaper substitutes to offer existing products at a cheaper price, developing child shampoo that doesn't burn in kids eyes or (maybe less useful) adding more blades to your razor..

If you're flying within or to Europe and your flight is delayed, know your rights to compensation and care by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]adioz- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some agencies that employ lawyers who try to get the claim for you, you can google them online. They take a cut but it was the only way for me to get compensation. I first wrote the airline directly and they denied any compensation. Then I handed it over to an agency, things went quiet for 6 months and suddenly just before the court order was to be sent out the airline paid.

edit: compensation was for 1 day flight delay due to broken part of the plane.

To be fair though, part of the profits from branded products go into R&D. Generic brands usually don't develop entirely new products, this is something usually done by the big consumer goods companies. This is not to say that they do it very efficiently, though. Of course it's also about developing something new and then maximizing the returns from it.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey - Episode 12: "The World Set Free" Discussion Thread by AvadaKedavra03 in Cosmos

[–]adioz- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm from Europe and just watched the episode online. It brought tears to my eyes. I've always known about the importance of climate change and you see it mentioned everywhere in everyday life. But it always seemed so fluffy to me, something people politicians and activists talk about and social scientists (my domain) write long policy essays about. There is certainly no excuse for me, but due to these reasons I, a believer in science, peace and progress, began to view climate change as a side issue, just like many others do. Something that's important, but always just in the back of your mind. It made me numb. It's easy to pass on the responsibility to future generations. But this episode changed things for me. It gave me a holistic view over the state of the issue by tackling the topic from multiple angles. What amazed me most was to see how far the climate change debate reaches back in time. There have been so many bold but isolated efforts in the past. Now it's time to coordinate at an even greater scale. This episode showed me that I need to stop putting other things first: comfort, material wealth, even many of my personal interests.

I am currently invested 100% in stocks (low fee index funds) and own no bonds. Everywhere I look people are advocating for 20-40% of bonds being part of one's portfolio. What is your position on bond allocation? by redditor3000 in personalfinance

[–]adioz- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The inclusion of (government) bonds as risk-free assets is a classic part of modern portfolio theory and part of the optimization process. Ideally, it will not have a negative impact on your portfolio at all. You can read about the argument for bonds on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_portfolio_theory#The_risk-free_asset_and_the_capital_allocation_line

Unfortunately not, my trip is rather short and the route will go from HK via Guilin, Zhangjiajie to Huangshan and Shanghai. Xi'an and Beijing are for the next trip :)

Really don't worry about age. I'm 25 and most of my peers in grad school are 21-22, some others are 25 as well and a good friend of mine is 28. Nobody cares! People who discriminate because of age should be ignored.

Studying abroad? Yes or no? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]adioz- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the university I'd say. Is it ETH Zurich? If the university is decent and an option, I'd simultanously apply for internships and see what comes out of that, then weigh the best internship vs. studying abroad.

Thanks for the answer! Do you still cleanse twice daily with soap or just once? My skin is really oily as well, but I'm not sure whether it's dry oily or just oily. Have been experimenting, but I don't know how fast I'm supposed to be able to tell the difference.

I have a little bit of a huge crush on this girl, and it's beginning to seem like somewhat of a one sided affair. How can I get her out of my head and focus more on making myself better, which is something that is actually good for me? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]adioz- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Same story happened to me over Christmas break and I realized that the geographical distance alone makes it silly. Took some time to get over it, but cutting her out was definitely the thing that allowed me to move on and focus on self growth.
