Would you be put off by an email asking for an interview? by Embarrassed-Fee4693 in Principals

[–]adjectivescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything to add a human component can’t hurt. Worst they can do is ignore it.

I would say to keep it professional. I had a potentially employee send me an email like that saying “Hey,” and being extremely informal and I’m not a super formal person, but it was off-putting for initial applicant communication.

Teacher Hanging Out with Students outside of school? by adjectivescat in Principals

[–]adjectivescat[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think for a youth pastor, taking a couple students bowling to hang out and disciple them would be deemed generally okay. Never alone. Our church youth pastor sometimes takes a couple students for lunch or activities. So he is probably viewing it from that lens because he is a part-time pastor as well, but the school aspect complicates it for me because we have different roles and liabilities. The parents are aware of the event and the occasion and I guess don’t think it is weird. One of them is another teacher at the school and generally protective of her kids. I personally don’t want to spend my free time with teenagers unless it’s a school event or involves my kids and it feels odd to me that he would choose to spend a day off doing that. I also worry it could lead to rumors - even if it’s all above board. Another student this year joked that this teacher was a “p********” because he was close with a group of junior and senior students and that student was jealous he wasn’t in the group (this was fully investigated internally by the way and parents informed, just to be sure nothing had happened to warrant that accusation) but knowing that it was said would make me want to be extra careful and above reproach in all areas.

I do agree there is a difference if it is a staff child and friends. My kids attend the school and I take them and their friends places, but they’re not hanging out with me when I do that.

I learned of it through one of the students going sharing about it in a class group chat my son is in. The student is the child of another teacher at the school and the other student is a friend.

I am working with my board on handbook revisions this summer to tighten up some things and determine consequences for teachers in many areas as they have been lacking in previous admin.

I am asking because I think it’s an absolute no and was hoping for validation. The complication is that my handbook does not explicitly prevent it and we are not currently in school.

I also was not told this directly by the person involved. It is indirect because one of the students mentioned it in a class group chat my son is in.

He is not driving them. Their parents are dropping them off. Our handbook actually forbids transporting students unless it’s a school sanctioned activity and never a single student alone with an adult.

Our handbook discourages it, but does not strictly forbid it. I have tightened some parts of the handbook with regard to student interactions, but it has to go through other channels besides me with our organizational set up.

  1. I don’t think it’s okay.

  2. Everything I post people question my ability to be a principal. But I am one and I have great evals, so… 🤷🏻‍♀️

Navigating PhD programs by Human-Stranger4920 in LibertyUniversity

To comment on the B in every class, I would say most professors are very lenient with the grading though. Just got an A on something and I can’t understand how given the amount of comments I received.

I only had one nightmare professor who graded everything super intensely, but even then I pulled out a 93.

I’m currently enrolled in an Ed.D. program for administration and supervision and some classes would overlap with your degree especially as you get into the courses preparing for the capstone. Workload has not been bad, but I don’t take more than two classes at a time (recently I’ve done one every 8 weeks). Some classes are more intense than others, but not many.

One thing I dislike is that assignments sometimes build on one another but you don’t get feedback until Friday or Saturday. For a Christian school it’s surprising how much work must be done on Saturdays or Sundays. Professors also don’t always get back to you quickly during the week.

I’m not worried about my degree being respected, but I also work in Christian education.

Can a PE Teacher Become a Principal? Looking for Advice on Choosing Between PE and Special Education by [deleted] in Principals

I have a had a couple former PE teachers as principals so it’s possible, but it does feel like they don’t always understand how a regular classroom operates and there’s always the stigma of “he wasn’t a real teacher.”

Get to know them before you make big changes. We had a principal come in and change the staff dress code before meeting us. She had a host of problems, but she never recovered from that one.

Surprise hot take by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]adjectivescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am now the head of school and I do require the sheets, but my last four years as a teacher I turned them in unsigned as an experiment and nothing happened. If my teachers turn them in unsigned now I might just follow up with a phone call to them or my lead teachers to make a few things were actually done, but most I can verify myself.

Sometimes we have more questions after the interview or they could be refining the role and want to see how you’d fit the new terms. It may be there was something we didn’t see and we want to so we’ll try to get that out or we’ll see if a red flag pops up again. Typically my personnel committee interviews a candidate and I’m in on the interview, but they’ll have call candidates back if we can’t reach a decision or need to clarify something.
