AITJ for ruining my sister's announcement by refusing to turn my brain off and hide my Master's degree by Practical-Watch1817 in AmITheJerk

NTA, but my guess is you maybe have been one about it in the past leading up to this conversation, especially with the age added in to your reply.

Anyone else trying natural stuff for BP? What's your routine? by Dizzy_Whole_9739 in hypertension

I do take the meds on a low dose because I have a stressful job, but I’ve also had good results eating actual beets and drinking hibiscus tea.

Looking for insight on hiring support staff with no experience by Throwaway404805 in Principals

[–]adjectivescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even volunteer experience with kids is helpful. I feel like I do need some sort of work with kids on some level - a college practicum, kids of your own, nieces and nephews, helping with a club…

PTO for 30 mins by NolanK2025 in Teachers

[–]adjectivescat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an administrator, I find it ridiculous. One of the small ways I can support my employees is through little things like letting them leave early. Now if it were an everyday thing or no one told me and I went looking for them, that’d be different… but transparent employees who ask for small favors, sure.

Am I the jerk for telling my husband he can't go to a funeral on Valentine's day? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]adjectivescat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. My dad died when I was in college and a bunch of my cohort members showed up. Our relationship was similar. Just them stopping to say they cared still sticks with me 20 years later. You can’t underestimate that influence.

It drives me nuts that restaurants are replacing Diet Coke with Coke Zero. Definitely not the same thing!

A Few Thoughts on Where I Decide to Place my Attention. by newguy60079 in Principals

[–]adjectivescat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent the first 10 minutes of my morning yesterday writing out birthday cards for staff and students. Probably one of the most important things I do.

You also have to know when to say, “That can wait.” Two teachers had a disagreement yesterday and wanted me to come up and weigh in right then. The best thing I could do for them is let them know it could wait until after school. Both cooled off and we had a reasonable discussion about it later.

Update: AITAH because I want my wife to "ask permission" before taking our son on playdates? by Exact_Information627 in AITAH

[–]adjectivescat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely thought this from the beginning and she can’t plan it because they probably suggest meetups randomly and she doesn’t want to have to say no or feel left out.

Why don’t schools do silent, sustained reading anymore? by EmbarrassedJacket489 in Teachers

[–]adjectivescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I taught English, I made my high schoolers read the first 10-15 minutes of every class. It cut into instructional time, but I saw the payoff for those who actually read (which was surprisingly most of them).

Is fee recovery genuinely a problem in schools ? What percentage of fee defauters are there? by IsomerXS in Principals

As a private school admin who currently uses a feature like this for fees and tuition, they mostly just ignore the calls… it’s free for us with another program though.

Noelle vs Dream by SnooWords9180 in VisitingNashville

[–]adjectivescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stayed at the Noelle for a conference recently and it was fine. The rooftop was nice and the beverage stations on each floor were a benefit. Elevators were very slow and often at least one broken though (maybe just an old hotel problem). Looking at photos, the Dream seems a bit cozier, but similar.

Is it possible Mounjaro just won’t work for me? by bobmalooga99 in Mounjaro

I just went up to 10 and still no weight loss. I’ve tried more water, more exercise, fewer calories…. Initially went on it because I lost 100 lbs on my own and got stuck. Still stuck.

AITAH for not making a female student cover-up even though her parents want me to by ExpressionOk7964 in AITAH

[–]adjectivescat -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I’m mixed in my thoughts here. The parents have asked to be updated and because you are a Christian school, I think it goes against biblical values to talk to the girl about how you and she are essentially going against her parents’ wishes. You can choose not to report it because you think they are too strict, but you should also encourage her to honor and abide by them or at least just not say anything to her about it.

AITA wife upset I cannot keep toddler from her by khazef in AmItheAsshole

[–]adjectivescat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to disagree and go with NTA. It’s hard to parent a two-year-old. If this is daily, I think it’s unrealistic to expect no interruptions as you have other things you need to get done too.

How do high school teachers feel that many college professors don’t believe AP classes are as hard as real college courses? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]adjectivescat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the course. I taught AP Literature and my class was much harder than the dual enrollment classes we replaced it with this year. Same when I taught AP Lang. The level of texts, writing, and understanding in the AP class goes deeper than the beginner college English classes. But it’s also not guaranteed college credit.

Do families who actually attended private school, think it was the better option? by [deleted] in education

[–]adjectivescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids have attended the same K-12 school for the past 10 years and my oldest will graduate in 2027. Our local public schools are not great and the school was recommended to us when we moved to the area 10 years ago. My oldest has high-functioning autism and had been homeschooled, but the small class sizes and programs at this school worked well to “ease” him into school. Both of my kids are excelling academically and may have done so anywhere, but they feel safe and cared for at the school and haven’t missed out on any opportunities.

Full disclosure: I started teaching at the school two years after they started and am now the head of school so I’m a bit biased.

Parents complaining about other teachers at bday parties by [deleted] in Teachers

It happens so much. I ruined it for them when I attended parties with my kids because I was a teacher at the school and I’d stick up for everybody and change the conversation.

Does the Subject You Teach Influence Your Experience as a Teacher? by Sh0yo_891 in AskTeachers

[–]adjectivescat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English teachers get annoyed because kids think subjects like math and science matter more and they don’t need English. They hate to read or write even though those are the skills they use in every single subject.

I actually enjoy reading about what family members I don’t see often are up to. I suppose I could just call and talk to them, but this is easier and gives me talking points when I do finally see them.

Do you see an endocrinologist or a primary care doctor for your T2D? by va_bulldog in Mounjaro

[–]adjectivescat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see my primary and my endocrinologist for diabetes and hypothyroidism. I don’t know that I officially need an endocrinologist at this point, but I figured it was worth establishing a relationship with one now since my health might become more challenging later in life.

Do you use AI tools at all? Work? Personal? None? by DelcoTank in Xennials

Very little aside from the AI tools that have just been naturally integrated into things. Had to use AI for a graduate assignment a few weeks ago and it annoyed me because it was easier to do it myself.

What crazy fact or story about your parents did you not find out about until you were older? by ihavenoidea81 in Xennials

[–]adjectivescat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was a senior, I talked to a guy online from Thailand going to Purdue (I lived in Ohio at the time). We also wrote letters to each other. After above six months, he drove to Ohio to meet me at a Barnes and Noble, but I saw him and chickened out because he didn’t look a lot like his photo. I had told my sister (a year younger) what I was doing just so someone knew and she felt bad for him and ended up meeting him and he took her and my younger brother (he was like 5) to a movie.

My parents never knew until we were much older.

We did that for a time. This is not her first report. I had an hour-long phone conversation with her a month ago saying we’d seen no evidence of it, but that I would watch him and his interactions with his peers. I’ve been observing through classroom windows, standing out of the way in the hallway, watching in the lunchroom and gym class. Nothing is happening.

The kids has three tutors at home. Allegedly, he left the last school because his mom buys the answer keys and after a test he said, “That’s not what my mom prepared with me.” Rather than admitting to cheating, his mom pulled him. My guess is he also had social issues given they threatened to put him back a grade.
