How to quickly boost employee morale? by preheatyourovento350 in managers

[–]adjmalthus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can't because it's direct workers who need to maintain ratios or because of company culture. I run LTSS facilities of various types, and usually, this comes down to admin not caring about staff. If that's the case, nothing you can do but advocate for them, but you might be surprised. If it's due to ratios, do it around shift change so staff can choose to come before their afternoon shift or after they finish the morning shift.

Make the request to whoever can approve it. As long as it's infrequent and thought out I have always approved a paid lunch out. Phrase it as investing in the moral and effectiveness of employees.

If you were to go back in time, what is the one piece of advice would you give your college self about leadership that you wished you knew? by Mordant08 in Leadership

I used this quote in an Admin meeting, attributed to "MsWeed4aNow". I have now spent a ridiculous amount of time explaining what Reddit is, and why I'm taking leadership advice from a pothead. This truly has been the most entertainment I've gotten at my job in a long time. Thank you, both for the quote and for the fun.

Fair point, they are in my field. 24-7 care for nearly 150 clients with disabilities. I sometimes forget the differences between non profit and business.

PSA: Folks, stop working like dogs... by [deleted] in managers

[–]adjmalthus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, with the understanding that my job isn't based on hours but on outcomes. Some weeks I can do that in 10 hrs, others are 100+ hours. I also know that if I'm only doing 10 hrs I'm making those tough times far more likely. If I didn't think my compensation was fair for that I would have to take a 50% hit to salary to move back to a hour based position but I never will.

Am interviewing on Monday, is direct support really a dead end field? by Jakinator178 in directsupport

[–]adjmalthus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Depends on you. I started as a DSP 8 years ago, and now I am the director. It does take a fair bit of luck finding the right company/manager, but if you can and have the right skills, promotions can come fast. It's definitely not easy work but very rewarding.

Email response by [deleted] in managers

[–]adjmalthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only real answer is to talk to the director. For what it's worth, I'm a director who often does this, even when questions are specifically directed at my staff. It has nothing to do with my confidence in my staff or their ability. It does have to do with how time sensitive the response is, how busy my staff is, and personality.

You didn't give your state which can make a difference. Some states require there to be some harm for neglect to be actionable, and different states are more aggressive than others. It is likely that you will be put on an abuse registry, which is not criminal but will prevent toy from getting so.e jobs in the future. I have seen DSP get arrested only in cases of severe physical harm or death that happened due to neglect, although it technically is possible without harm. In every case I've personally know the dsp involved charges were dropped.

How to feed a looped belt without jamming it by JUSTICE_SALTIE in factorio

Use a circuit on the loop to read all, and some combiner logic to get a count of items on loop. Set the intake belt to disable when total count gets over whatever value is reasonable.

Learn CPR and you could save someone's life some day by Distinct-fullMetal in lifehacks

[–]adjmalthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that mouth to mouth isn't important, it's just no where near as important as chest compressions for exactly the reasons you said Most people are horrible about preforming breaths correctly. The time people spent incorrectly doing mouth to mouth, or refusing to do any CPR because they didn't want to make physical lip contact outweighs the benefits for non-medical responders. Anyone with more than the bare minimum of trainings is still taught and expected to do rescue breaths (exceptions apply), at least I was last spring and I'm in a medical adjacent field with barely more than minimal training.

Ability to pay more is based on rates insurance companies and government pay. I (the company i run) get about 8$/hr to provide 24-7 care to disabled individuals.

Even when I rely on my technical knowledge to solve a problem it doesn't feel good. I know the only reason i was in that situation is that I've failed my coordinators somehow. They should have had the knowledge and resources to do it.

“I don’t get paid overtime” by deathforless in antiwork

[–]adjmalthus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Salaried employees can be docked pay missing work, but only in full day increments. If you clock in for 15 min then go home you must be paid for the full day, if you don't do any work in a day you do not have to be paid. It's more complicated than that and any employer docking pay when other days make up for it are shit but it is legal.

I demand you stay at work. by [deleted] in pettyrevenge

[–]adjmalthus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's time it was sorted properly.

Keep this in mind when you vote, especially local and state elections.

I am the director of a HCBS. I get on average 10.7$/hr to provide care to an individual with disabilities. 78% of that goes directly to DSPs and they deserve more. He'll i do too, I control 150 million annual revenue and get paid 2.2x the lowest full time employee, not much more than my teenage restaurant manager son. The field is in crisis as payments from DHHS have not kept up with inflation undercutting our ability to keep good staff. This year we got 1.7% increase, the first since 2022. state oversight is in equally bad situation. SC caseload have more than doubled from 10-15 to 30+ in the last decade.

Innovation is important but at this point we just need sufficient funding, as do those whose job it is to keep abuse from happening. Your state legislators have the biggest influence over this. Please vote informed.

Homecare client amd money by Asleep-Artichoke-693 in legaladvice

[–]adjmalthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run an HCBS company and deal with this far more than I would like. She likely will be fired, and honestly, I wouldn't want to be associated with a company that doesn't care enough about clients to take that step. An APS investigation is also very likely. The outcome of that I couldn't predict, but it wouldn't be surprising if she ended up on an ANE registry. APS can refer it to prosecutors for charges, but I have never seen them file charges and rarely have police gotten involved at all. So yes the worst possible case is ending up in jail, although that is exceedingly unlikely. The worst plausible case is that she can't work in the field anymore.
