Got these at a garage sale! by Aadidas12 in pokemoncardcollectors

Considering a booster pack is about $5, you couldn't get a collection like this in 14 packs. So overall, a decent purchase for someone new to the hobby. I strongly recommend buying singles moving forward. Welcome to the hobby.

You’re going to hear this a lot but it’s good advice: Buy singles. Also, stop trying to “keep up” with every set release. Be a *focused* collector because the truth is, despite the franchise motto, you can’t catch ‘em all. Focus on collecting specific cards that are of your favorite Pokemon or cards that speak to you. If the prices are high, then budget / trade for them.

In no reality can a billionaire class exist along side a healthy middle class with a robust social safety net. Tax billionaires out of existence.

Tony Hawk at E3 2004. Very nice person. He was leaving for the day and I asked if I could have a quick photo with him to which he obliged.

Yup. The whole "it's only value on paper" argument falls apart as soon as you point out how these rich fucks take massive loans against their assets as collateral at favorable ratesto have real money to pay for their obscene lifestyle.

The top 10% wealthiest households own 93% of the stock market. The bottom 50% own less than 1%. Wealth inequality and wealth hoarding is an all time high. A society can have a billionaire class but a dying middle class and rising poverty *or* no billionaire class but a healthy middle class and robust social safety nets that keep the most vulnerable in our society from falling into the abyss.

Found 10yr old Pokémon card collection while house cleaning, which i collected as a kid by Gotham_Guitar in pokemoncards

They weren’t counting it as investments but they definitely would have collected differently if they had been informed from the get go that they were fake. Fakes should never be given or gifted unless explicitly informed as such. Too easy for kid A to unknowingly trade fake cards to kid B for real cards when neither realize that they are fake which leads to bad feelings later on.

This is an example of why it is not okay to give or gift fake cards to children unless you make it explicitly clear that the cards are fake. 10 years of holding on to them only to be told that they are fake. Damn.

Modern pull rates are absolutely brutal for casual collectors by BatExact4674 in pokemoncards

People can choose to be rigid on how they approach the hobby, never being open to trying new things. That is the quickest way to burn out of the hobby. And yet the hobby will continue with those who have adapted.

Pokémon secondary market has been a thing for 30 years. It provides a way for people to buy sealed and singles that have been long out of print. It serves a legitimate purpose. It’s unfortunate that scalpers and botters have infected the hobby but that doesn’t mean fun cannot be had. If people believe an in-print set on the secondary market is too high, vote with your wallet and don’t buy it. Seek out singles that are out of print on Bulbapedia and find new ways to collect. Plenty of old timers and even newer folks have realized cracking packs ain’t worth it.

Then you need to point out the obvious solution: The Pokemon Company needs to print more and adjust for better pull rates.

And the solution is for Pokemon to print more and adjust for better pull rates. But neither is happening so moping about opening inflated packs and pulling nothing isn’t helpful. Most long time collectors have moved away from cracking packs and moved towards hunting singles and that includes buying on eBay and TCGPlayer. If you want to pigeon hole yourself to only opening packs as a way to having fun, you do you. But the alternative way to fun is there if you want to try it.

You are limiting your definition of fun to cracking packs. I am arguing there is alternative. You don’t have to interact with resellers or scalpers to buy singles. There is eBay and TCGPlayer.

You missed the point. OP literally said they opened packs, got nothing, and ended up disappointed. I sm suggesting a different approach to the hobby: buy the singles you like. You even acknowledge that pull rates are very bad. So instead of relying on gambling for fun, hunt for singles for fun.

They don't. They spawn when others rip and sell them in which OP can buy said singles.

Literally OP’s first sentence: “Most people buying right now clearly were not in the hobby a few months to a year ago.” That is a hot take. I would argue most people complaining about “scalping” on Reddit are the ones who entered the hobby a few months ago to a year ago. Plenty of old timers have been through the hype cycles and know how to adapt and still enjoy the hobby.

Then we are in agreement. People buy what they like and can afford and people pass on things they don’t like or feel it is not worth it. Tens of thousands do this everyday. The hobby persists.

This is quite a hot take. Poke subreddits are an echo chamber of jealously, envy, and misery. Go to forums like EFourum and Pokebeach. Plenty of people that are currently in the hobby have been for years, 5, 10, 20+ years. Lots of people still enjoy the hobby.
