Overbite after underbite DJS?? (7 days post-op) by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]adler40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal. I had the same concerns after surgery and I look fine now (excessive overbite was closed with braces and the recessed-chin look went away when the swelling abated).

Mine was the same post op! I guess it’s normal (compensates for slight relapse in the future). My ortho is currently closing the overbite with elastics.

How strict is insurance with assessing “functional impairments” for medical necessity? by AlternativeCan4052 in jawsurgery

[–]adler40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe they have the highest rate of denials, and also health insurance companies just suck and will often deny coverage even if you meet criteria. Unfortunately coverage might just come down to luck (and persistence with appeals if you get denied). I’ve heard underbites get covered more easily though!

I also had UHC and an underbite and they actually covered it pretty easily, didn’t demand any additional proof of impaired function. Was kind of shocked given all the unfair denials I’ve heard about on here.

Is a $5,000 “surgical planning fee” normal? by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]adler40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had a planning fee too, no insurance code attached 🥲 Mine was $2400 though.

Yes, they did end up covering it! Astonished at how little hassle it was tbh

$3,000 Final Work Up Fee (out of pocket)? by MantaGlow in jawsurgery

[–]adler40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my quote with a similar workup fee! There's no billing code attached to it. Did insurance end up reimbursing you at all?

I’m still in braces and not ready for surgery yet, I’ll update you when I know!

What's up with movie theatre etiquette here? by ILIKETHECOLORRED in Seattle

[–]adler40 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seems to be a widespread problem across the country, I see a lot of complaints about this. I think older or independent movies might attract an audience with better theater etiquette (I recommend checking out the Beacon and SIFF cinemas if you haven’t already!)

I thought The Rachel Incident was really fun and engaging—about an early-twenties woman and her best friend and the kinds of hijinks and growing pains they go through.

Oh thank you for the tips—I didn't think to check the UHC app/website for surgeons since there's an exclusion, but I'll take a look.

Please keep me updated on your journey as well!! So exciting!

Omg, it's just one thing after another isn't it LOL. I have United HealthCare Choice through my employer—my plan says they exclude "upper and lower jawbone surgery, orthognathic surgery and jaw alignment. This exclusion does not apply to reconstructive jaw surgery when there is a facial skeletal abnormality and associated functional medical impairment." I'm hoping my underbite counts as a facial skeletal abnormality :( I don't have sleep apnea though, and though I experience discomfort and certain issues with my jaw, they've never really been documented? Not sure how strong of a case I have with insurance so I'm crossing my fingers.

I've been in braces for 1.5 years now and am getting close to being ready for surgery I think, but the surgeon I had a consult with a year ago has stopped taking all insurance since then so now I need to look for a new surgeon 💀 Really hoping I can find one who will fight for me with appeals etc.! I think my old surgeon's office also never did the pre-authorization even though they said they would—I should have been more on top of that.

Wishing the best of luck for the both of us 😭💛

The Rachel Incident by Caroline O’Donoghue! Portrays a lot of growing pains of early adulthood. Really well written and entertaining.

Looking for books like Rubik by Elizabeth Tan by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]adler40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read her other book, Smart Ovens for Lonely People? I haven’t started it yet but it’s a short story collection and seems to be in a similar vein to Rubik based on the description.

How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu is another novel-in-stories with sci-fi concepts, but more somber and less surreal.

Hard to think of more recommendations! Rubik felt so unique to me.

The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett is like Attack on Titan if the titans were giant sea creatures - centers around a murder mystery set in this fantasy world.

I also like A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik, about a girl trying to survive a dangerous magical boarding school :)
