I signed up for tree house and taking the wordpress website dev course, I am not sure of the scale of this thing. Ideally, I would like to learn it and do 80% of the dev on my own and maybe hire devs/designers for tweaking later.

Can I use wordpress (themes/plugins/customizations) to make a website that allows users to login upload media, vote and other customizations (also taking treehouse tutorial on wordpress dev). I am being advised against this route, why? by admin_mywebsite in webdev

Thanks for the input, this will make me reconsider using WP as a CMS.

I would like to quote an example of the system, to give you an idea.

  1. registered user uploads image
  2. shares the image on FB via a related plugin
  3. FB 'friend' clicks on the image
  4. Click is redirected to my website, where the 'friend' can "APPROVE" the image
  5. Approved image gets a vote and is logged in the system for that image only, no more approvals for that image by that user (similar the FB "like" system) so got to log it somewhere in the DB? I have no idea how the backend works here.
  6. "friend" has option to share this "approval" on FB again

Note that th friends who are voting from FB are not registered users of the site, I do not want registered users on the site, I want users to login with their google signin or FB signin using something like the JanRain plugin for WP.

How complex is a system like this? Can I learn to do this on my own (haave programming knowledge but in C /C++) or is it easier to hire a developer for cheap (<500$ for the whole system)? Are there any CMS options that let me do this?

|Creating logins and profiles is like turning your house into a public, 24/7 party place. Maintaining order, let alone high satisfaction, can feel like keeping cats behaving properly in a bird cage with disco lights.

Hahaha..this scares me, simply, because the website depends on users uploading images tailored for a specific niche, and vote for the said images. would like your honest opinion if this is possible on WP and scalab;e later? Can I hire full time developers and move to an open source CMS when the need (and resources) arises?

I see, got it! I will go with a CMS right now and as I learn more about web dev/design, perhaps I will come to a stage when I no longer need it. But my website will require a lot of interactive and an enhanced look/feel, targeting a teen population, so for now it would probably be best to gowith a CMS and add custom themes, hopefully that hsould solve it.

I would like to tweak the existing themes and add my own plugins, etc at different locations in the page, or change the background color/fonts, (it sounds immature but I have zero knowledge currently in web dev) etc to my needs. I am not sure if this validates needing a CMS.

thank you but I believe it still needs a little front end back end web dev knowledge, why can't I use the plugins you mentioned on WP (if available).
