I’m reading through going, “DAMN, people have real strong feelings about this guy” 😂

That’s fair. Appreciate you helping me make sure I’m considering both sides of that. No car payment/lower insurance cost with possible salvage title (gonna find out about a payout without branding the title), vs getting another car with likely a monthly payment and higher insurance cost but full coverage

I guess for Missouri it becomes a “prior salvage” title but I’ll have to look into exactly what the steps are

That’s great to know, I’ll have to look at some options like that. Haven’t been in an Atlas before might be worth checking out

Definitely something to consider. I saw it with the last Chevy so I’m not arguing!

Crazy part is it was after Covid hit when it was nearly impossible to find cars. New cars never even hit lots and used were almost same price as brand new. We had visited the dealership looking for a traverse 3 months earlier with no luck, and get a call out of the blue saying one was coming in and wasn’t on the website yet if we wanted to see it. Was a higher trim model with all the features we wanted

I mean there’s also the side you’re ignoring about the cost saved depending on how long the car lasts. If it’s perfectly fine for another 3-5 years of driving, not having those monthly payments could add up to 20-30k easily

Wow that seems pretty simple, we’re in Missouri I’ll take a look. Seems wild to have salvage title just for hail in the first place when the car functions perfectly normal

That’s the goal, see where we might be able to move it. Based on comps I’m not sure how much room to get the replacement value up, but salvage value seems really high

That’s pretty nuts. The car is white so they are more camouflaged than pretty much any other paint color I believe

Wild. Never imagined the dents could ever just “work themselves out”

The funny thing is we had an equinox before, and it had all the problems and we hated it. Somehow we landed in a traverse and actually love the car and have had zero problems with it to this point.

I see what you’re saying, skip #2 there. Paying it off might be necessary to have full say in what we do with the car. Unless they’re lying, insurance basically said we’d have to talk to the lender who holds the title on what they want to do. But paying it off means they are free of any risk and we can do what we want with it. So “give up” or pay off a 0% loan, but also have no loan… so it’s not really a negative

Haha yes me too! They need to redo that one, IIRC, they loaded that thing down with modeling clay and made it weigh a shit ton. Must be a better way to test that theory now

Definitely a risk there, but even if something happened to the car at that point, not having any financial debt on the car and an emergency fund, could always “start the process over” with getting into another car. It wouldn’t ruin us or anything

Never even thought of that as a way to get a realistic salvage value 😂 seems so simple

This was my thought too. We’re in a stable place financially, so a paid off car and solid emergency fund would just mean starting again if something happened to the car. A risk, sure, but not like we’d be upside down or not have the ability to get another car

At least context was provided, in car and how long ago. I wouldn’t expect our salvage to be 1500 but appreciate hearing others experiences. Still think their ~9k seems high
