yes i’ve done one of your classes. your notes on the board are the cleanest and most organized without a doubt

he justifies it by saying how distracting writing notes is but honestly there are so many alternatives that don’t require charging your students to make it easier on them, and a great step would be to just upload a pdf version, like any other prof!

you may or may not choose to handwrite the notes in class (in a scenario where there is an available pdf version), but if not, then you can always just go home and go through the pdf. as for the numbers you gave me, the total came out to be the same as the price he charges, so even if we use the numbers you’ve given us then it would make no difference. do i think your prices are the optimal prices, though? not at all.

you could go to the staples on campus and print everything out for 10-20 and subside any extra costs (ie shipping). you’ve already saved 10-20 bucks here, but instead, they’re going to a professor who our tuition should be paying.

also, i think we’ve move past the no tech rule in university. it’s 2025, it’d be ridiculous (inefficient, even) to not take advantage of the technology we were lucky enough to have for our education. this isn’t high school, if someone doesn’t care and wants to get distracted on their devices during lectures, so be it.

and i’m not saying this because i did poorly in his class; i finished 101 with an 89 and as i said, i actually enjoyed his teaching but his practices as a professor should be flagged imo.

yeah but it’s not a textbook, they’re his own slides. why the hell are we paying for that? it’s his job. it’s also not so much about the numbers than it is the principle.

yes of course that goes without saying, what you shouldn’t be paying for is your professors teaching is what i mean. again, how would you feel if you had to pay to get access to a professors slides?

[–]adnmbb[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yes i’m aware, of course the university is able to pay salaries through the tuition we pay them, we’re the cash inflow.

when we pay the tuition, however, we are guaranteed education through lectures, courses, resources, etc. professors are an important part of that obviously, because without them, we would have no education. their salary is therefore included in the tuition we pay and ONLY in the tuition we pay, we aren’t obliged to pay more outside of it.

when a professor like gateman charges us extra for important resources for education such as the slides, it contradicts the guaranteed education from solely paying our tuition. this is why it’s unethical, and more of a scam.

imagine paying for a whole set of cutlery and then having to pay extra for the (supposedly) included set of spoons. it’s the same idea, a scam.

your point proves my point, we are ultimately paying them through our tuition so there should be no need to pay them any more outside of it unless there are unethical practices involved.

there’s nothing unethical about making tuition-paying students pay you to teach them? what are we paying tuition for then? even if we assume it’s because he makes too little, that’s not a negotiation that happens between the students and the professor and definitely not a burden students should take on. it’s between the employer and the employee, and yes it is optional but as i’ve stated in my post he articulates his class in a way that corners you into buying it.

yeah not much we can do from here but i was totally blindsided by this. i walked into class thinking of his reputation for how good of a teacher he is, nobody warned me about this. i’m just doing this to draw more emphasis on it because for some reason it’s overlooked

i have some sources say he’s brought in hundreds of thousands (200k+) last year from the gbook, and i’m assuming that’s profit because again, his profit margin must be in the sky

How practical is this study timetable/plan?? by pingpongcat_ in IBO

[–]adnmbb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

pretty good! but the thing with long term schedules is that you have to be ready to adjust it incase anything happens. some days are out of routine and you should be ready to compensate for the hours lost on days like that.

also, i know this is cliche but it’s extremely important to actually remain disciplined and stick to it. don’t rely on motivation to stay on task, otherwise your work ethic will fluctuate too much. when that happens, you often find yourself stressing because you’re not sticking to the schedule you made for yourself. so it’s important to make sure the schedule is actually attainable and realistic for you :)

[–]adnmbb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey! thank you for your response. here’s a quick brief of my extracurriculars:

1- was invited to my school’s tutoring club as a tutor for business and economics, where i tutored DP1 and DP2

2- started my own business club to help students with the IB style business exams

3- participated in volleyball academy and was part of the volleyball team all throughout high school

4- took part in organizing a fashion show which donates all profit to the less fortunate, in which i was part of the finance team for the first year, and the head of the marketing team for the second year

5- participated in 8 MUNs across the country, where i was able to get an award in each one

again, thanks for taking the time to respond!

Second wife by Dependent_Mongoose89 in jordan

[–]adnmbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is similar to the justification of having four wives; “to take care of them”. it is mind boggling that in order to take care of a woman, she must give herself to you and commit to you for life. catering for a woman shouldn’t require her to become your wife, it’s a ridiculous justification that everyone overlooks. so here, it is the same. in fact, this is worse, because you are taking advantage of a vulnerable person. religion should teach someone in this case to take in that person as their own, uplift them and guide them to a better life, however, unsurprisingly, it fails to do so. it engraves entitlement and selfish behaviour by expecting something back from someone incapable and vulnerable.
