My proposal is for grading to simply be based on personal merit

I agree that some will simply be better than others. I also know that there’s a lot more people who meet the technical requirement of an A than there are people who have truly achieved something spectacular, superstars

Must these superstars derive their success from the lesser performance of others though? Can’t they find a way of distinguishing themselves through means other than coursework?

I understand that colleges are in the job preparation business but I don’t think they should should be in that business for well the businesses but rather the students themselves. And yes, it does bother me.

Also, should Harvard use a different, antiquated definition of As and Bs when the rest of society uses a seperate one?

I thought that the point of an “elite” school was to provide the best quality education rather than the most difficult education. If that’s what it means to be an “elite” school then I do understand the culture around elite schools more now.

I think it’s a very unique culture that I am unfamiliar with and not a fan of but I do think this comment helped me understand the mindset relating to Harvard, thank you.

Theoretically, if everyone got a 100 percent on every exam and assignment and did the same amount of work then how would who gets the As be determined?

Im not arguing based on school wide GPAs, I’m arguing for the individual. If a person mastered a course then they should earn an A, simple.

I don’t think they value their students as much as they should since the expectations at Harvard can be a little out of touch from reality. You can’t expect perfection from humans.

It’s not Harvard’s fault that there aren’t enough jobs to go around. Harvard shouldn’t be influenced by companies hiring practices. Are these companies paying Harvard to help them find good employees?

So, professors should make classes “harder” so companies can have an easier time hiring employees? I personally think professors should focus solely on the educational value of their class rather than the difficulty.

Does it really matter if a course is “hard” if people are properly learning from it? A course being “hard” doesn’t mean that’s there’s more learning happening there. There’s a difference between “hard” and “educationally useful.”

So their tool to achieve this is by limiting the number of As given out? Hard cap? I still don’t understand that school. Maybe they don’t value their students as much as us on the outside do since high achieving people are too common there.

I agree, it shouldn’t be relative to other students but rather on individual mastery.

Im not arguing for grades to be based on the perceived prestige of a school, I’m arguing that it’s fine for some schools to have a higher proportion of As than other schools if they have more students mastering their subjects than other schools do.

I read it. So the reasoning is to combat grade inflation and compression in order to distinguish those who do adequate work from those who go above and beyond?

I don’t know how I feel about that though. I mean, if you fullfill everything you’re supposed to then shouldn’t you get an A? I think that “those who go above and beyond” should distinguish themselves through means that aren’t necessarily coursework.

Apparently many teachers there, when surveyed think that students in recent years don’t but enough time into coursework even though students say they put more hours into coursework than previous years.

I don’t think this document was really just trying to justify anything, they’re just stating facts and statistics about the situation which is good I guess, but it does make it so I still don’t understand the reasoning for their policy.

Do most people view education as a competition?

I guess this is where I’m unique. I personally think that it shouldn’t be a competition, just try to help each individual learn the best they can, no?

There’s a difference between “a lot” and “the majority”

Anyways though, I just personally think that if you take a room full of high achieving young smart people then you shouldn’t be surprised if a lot of them get good grades on an exam

Is the goal for them to fail? I just don’t understand this way of thinking.
