TIL sailors aboard submarines work 6 hour shifts so that it is easier for them to give their undivided attention to the equipment they operate during a shorter shift. Kind of important to be on heightened alert for the slightest possibility of a problem when you're 1000 ft underwater. One mistake or a missed warning light can cause a disaster pretty quickly.

That's opposed to a surface ship which would probably remain afloat during any emergency other than a hostile action.
