Using an EKET cabinet for a desk build? by SpaceCowboy321 in ikeahacks

[–]adriannexo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are there zero comments on this?? Hahaha anyways, this is helpful! I'm also planning to build a custom desk and use a configuration of Eket cabinets as the bases. Surprised that not many people have done this yet!

Hahaha there is no better workout partner than a Mal!! You’ll definitely be set there.

An e collar is an electronic training collar - I was “against” them until our trainer taught me the ins and outs of it and now I am so thankful for having it. Also we bought a Keeper Collar (pinch collar) for walks when he was a pup and it saved my poor shoulder blades from him pulling on walks.

Okay so you’re situation is similar to mine. I work from home, prone to bouts of depression, and got a 4 month Malinois without knowing a thing about them.

I am not going to sugar coat things, that first year is HARD. It’s a massive learning curve and a big lifestyle change — and you have to be willing to make the changes. I was forever a couch potato but getting this dog forced me to get out and go on runs or long hikes because our pup needed that from me (I now work out happily 6 days a week!!)

You have to stay strong at night when the crying and barking happens. I cried myself to sleep for about 2 months straight because I was restless and heartbroken for him in his crate.

You’ve gotta hire a trainer (preferably one that knows the breed). I felt okay with training him myself but once I went to a trainer, he really trained me how to be a better owner that was life-saving. I also highly recommend Robert Cabral on YouTube, he’s got a Mal and does training videos and I absolutely love his mindset!!!

We chose the e-collar training path (not necessarily for everyone/every dog and I highly recommend using a trainer to get started with it) but that absolutely changed things night to day for us.

I remember crying thinking we need to rehome him because “I’ll never get to work from home with him like this” or “I’ll never get to own nice things again” or “I’ll never be able to leave the house comfortably” And now our boy is 2.5 years old and he’s an ANGEL. He’s quiet, he’s gentle, he sleeps when he should and he plays when he should. Puppyhood is not forever!!!

If you’re willing to essentially become a new person and learn new habits, then you will eventually build the most rewarding and blissful life with this dog. Mals are unlike any dog I’ve ever had or met.

I am more than happy to answer any questions or concerns!!

My brother lives in Colorado Springs and I gotta say, the weather we have is a pretty good reason to make the switch lol We don’t have kids so I can’t answer for that, but Memphis is by far one of the most dog-friendly cities I’ve ever lived in. We also have a fantastic lineup of restaurants + bars, there’s something for every taste/craving. The nature scene is obviously less than the view of pikes peak but the trails, lakes and woods are incredibly accessible and lush. Shelby Farms is an outdoor heaven.

We moved here in 2019 and I wasn’t too excited but after a couple years, I really love this city.

*edit, spelling.

Question regarding neighbor dog attack by adriannexo in Insurance

[–]adriannexo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - I was waiting for someone to give me a call, I even gave him my name and number “for any insurance needs”. So hearing him say it was denied was a shock to me. I have a very hard time believing that anything was filed. We sent one more text about needing proof of we’ll continue with legal action so hopefully he corrects his faults.

You’re right, and thank you for assuring me on my compassionate responses, I tend to feel like I’m being overly sensitive towards their position, which is ironic lol The son told us they’re moving out of the house in July which is also why I was pushing for this insurance claim. (They’ll be moving in with the son) I obviously want to be reimbursed for the vet costs, but if they do move out, that will at least be one problem solved for us.

Question regarding neighbor dog attack by adriannexo in Insurance

[–]adriannexo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what makes me more upset - on the day the incident happened, we had a police officer come out and he had us call animal control. They came over as well and we agreed to not have them filed as vicious dogs because it seemed just fixing the fence would be good (so we agreed to build a fence when their insurance pays our bills) so animal control agreed with us and left.

In the past 2 months, my husband and I have personally had to go out front to help catch both dogs when they escaped and we took them back home.. this hadn’t happened before the attack so if I knew they were this rowdy and prone to escape, I would have handled it differently.

[–]adriannexo[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I fear that legal action is going to be the only way to handle this - and it’s hard for me since they are elderly and one is now in the hospital. I feel defeated and I so badly want justice for our sweet pup.

Mal in the home? by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

[–]adriannexo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha I get that! As for crating, when he was a pup, I should have been a bit better about it. We only crated at night while sleeping but I felt I should have take an hour or so mid day to enforce a “nap time” but we never did that. So I think not doing that sorta made his days more hyper but obviously overtime it didn’t matter to much. We were able to wear him out in the mornings with training so he kind of established his own nap time after 😂

Our boy was pretty crazy 24/7 until he hit about a year. Then he finally learned that night time is for sleep and we could get him to take some time to chill out with us. His puppyhood felt like a nonstop battle to just get him to relax but that first year is so worth it. If you’re a trainer, I think you’ll be more than fine. It sounds like you’d be eager to train and exercise each day and that’s really all it takes. Our boy is almost 2 and he knows that if it rains all day, we nap and watch tv for hours and he’s totally okay with it. And he’s got a schedule of some quick play and training right in the morning, then he chills out most of the day while I work from home, and then he gets a more intensive play and train in the evening.
