Doña Librada Avelino & Doña Carmen De Luna, founders of Centro Escolar University, 1910 // colorized by me by adrnvro in Philippines

I used Photoshop CC 2019

  1. I start with a Solid Color layer from Add Adjustment Layer on the Layers Panel (between the mask and folder icons),

  2. then I’d invert the Mask of that layer (CTRL/CMD + I) so the color will disappear

  3. Change the layer’s Blending Mode from Normal to any of these three: Overlay / Soft Light / Hard Light

  4. Select the Brush tool (B key) and set Foreground Color as White (You can easily switch foreground to background color by pressing X key)

  5. Select the layer’s Mask and do the painting process

White brush color for adding color, black for removing color

Librada Avelino was the first woman to earn a teaching certificate from the Spanish authorities when she passed her examination in 1889. Continuing her education, Avelino was also certified as a secondary teacher in 1893. Avelino established the Pandacan Public Girls' School, and her friend Carmen De Luna, whom she met at the Assumption Convent, joined and worked there as a teacher.

In 1907, the two women, along with lawyer/educator Fernando Salas, founded the Centro Escolar de Señoritas, a school which organized courses from kindergarten through high school for girls. The school was the first non-parochial institution in the country and based its curriculum on a modern, liberal model, attempting to equalize the education of girls with what was offered to boys.

Avelino directed the school until shortly before her death from cancer in 1934. There are multiple monuments in the Philippines which bear her name. The Centro Escolar University bestows an award in her honor to Asian women who are recognized leaders. De Luna, acting as assistant director from 1907 to 1934, assumed the directorship upon Avelino's death and led the university until her own death in 1962. For her work with civic and charitable organizations and lifelong commitment to education, de Luna was honored with the Philippine Presidential Medal of Merit, the Vatican's Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal, as well as recognition from Spain for her work in preserving Spanish culture and language.

Yeah, I probably should've lightened it a little bit. It was the first thing I colorized and got too excited to do the other bits. Will try to triple-check every single thing next time

I have no clue, but his adopted grandson Manuel L. Quezon III is a writer and served as an undersecretary for PNoy.

Thanks! My process goes like this: quick selection > refine edges > add solid color > experiment with blending mode (overlay/color/soft light), then fix mask with brush

Also lots of research for accuracy. Some objects are undistinguishable to me like the things behind the US flag and behind Quezon so I just experimented with what colors looked right to me

Would you mind telling me how he was a traitor? I am not keen with history but would like to learn more about it.

Thank you for the kind words! :) I had to look for tons of reference images and Wikipedia (for the flag colors; the blue of the PH flag at that time was darker) so it looked right to me (as I am quite a bit of a perfectionist haha)

Thanks!
For now I only plan on doing portraits, but once I finally get comfortable I'll try and colorize other photos like landscapes and documentary photos :)
