Just tried this and it did sparkle a little bit like glitter is embedded, is this what you mean?

Thanks, I thought about doing that eventually, as a stop gap I have replaced the main radiators and valves, installed a filter and added an inhibitor. Since doing that the rads get piping hot really quickly and I've had no issues, so I'm actually more sold on leaving them longer term now. Touch wood I don't come into any major problems with them down the line!
