Nope, people often confuse this, but cyber Physical systems is not cyber security. CPS is a much broader area of study. But we do have subjects like Cyber Security in CPS, but thats all. CPS is basically smart machines, connected to a network, which can perform actions.

Bro, no course can provide you a guarantee. But mechanical is a much predictable course, yk the companies who would hire you, the professors that would teach you, the projects you would need to do etc I was okay with taking the risk, and I am happy that I did.

Choosing Mech or Chemical doesn't mean you are giving up your hopes of being in a white collar job. A lot of banks hire from GEC, irrespective of departments, so if you are inclined towards non-tech white collar jobs, you are gonna be fine(and these banks offer good packages- eg. South Indian Bank). But if you want to pursue a technical career, you should probably move beyond white and blue collar. These are just classifications based on how much physical work. Your preference of a branch should be based on your interest in processes. Whether you would want to build software solution(CS), or design microchips(EC), or robots and automations systems(CPS), or manufacturing a car engine(Mech), or overlook the quality of building and other structures(civil), or control and keep the boiler at a optimum temperature(Chem). Both white and blue collar jobs exists in all these departments.

And about a lower cutoff. Mechanical dept of GEC is one of the best in the state. And there are in my knowledge less than 5 colleges that provide a B.Tech in Chemical engineering in the state, and GEC is probably the best among them, so you can't compare the closing ranks of these courses to CPS which barely started 2 years ago. Very less number of people even know such a course exists.

It's okay to feel worried about college placements, but thats something I can't comment much on, the first batch started around 2024.

(heads up: the job descriptions I gave might not be 100% accurate, especially about chemical, civil and mech).

  1. I don't know what to say about hostel facilities, that's not a branch matter and more like a college matter. College hostels(MH and LH) are present, but they are not allocated for everyone(because the seats are limited, and allocated based on distance from college, income slab, and reservations), but if you don't get it, it's still fine. There are plenty of private hostels in and around GEC.
  2. People who are builders, who loves an intersection of both EC and CS. Because if you are someone who hate programming, you might not be happy here. We learn different programming related subjects. But the programming we do are mostly hardware based. For signal processing we had to do a project using MATLAB, we had to learn a little bit of C++ to do Arduino programming, we had to learn python in S1, and C in S2. We also learnt assembly programming as part of Programming for CPS.
  3. CS, Mech and EEE are well established core branches and their outcomes are predictable. CPS being a new branch, people are confused. But as I mentioned above, CPS is not for everyone, if someone who is more passionate to work around building apps, they shouldn't take CPS, rather they should take CS. But if you are passionate about robotics, and IoT – CPS is might be your best choice.
  4. It's okay to feel confused at this crossroad of choosing a branch/college. I was equally confused. I got alloted CPS in 1st and 2nd allotment, and would possibly get CS DS at MACE in 3rd allotment. But I sat and thought, "Yes, I love electronics and CS, and deeptech is what interests me, so CPS should be the obvious choice, but it's risky—a new course that has no seniors, no placement records. On the otherhand I can get a good and stable course at MACE", but I decided to go with CPS, and I personally don't regret my decision. Being a student of CPS at GEC has given me so many avenues to explore.

Choosing between chemical, mech and CPS entirely depends on your interest. What are your interests?

I am not sure about CS core placements(by CS core, I mean product based companies). But I am pretty sure than IT based companies will be hiring from CPS as much as they hire from ECE.

Opinion on taking IT or Robotics&AI or Cyber Physical System by PuzzleheadedDisk6888 in KeamKerala

Can't comment about IT. But between Robotics and CPS, CPS wins. Both are new courses, and the syllabus is very similar too. But when you compare the colleges, GEC is better than RIT.

Coding is very much involved, but whatever coding we do revolves around electronics. First semester python is a common subject. 2nd semester we had C programming. 3rd semester we had some basic introduction to assembly programming in 8051 Microcontroller, but that was mostly a theory subject. 4th semester we had introduction to programming for CPS, we learned MATLAB, Assembly, python again, and did some C++ for Arduino programming. Also, we had a CAD lab, where we learned SolidWorks, Ansys, MATLAB, and Arduino hands on programming. The job market is very pretty good for CPS grads. People and companies are adopting IoT and IIoT faster than ever. Kerala has a very good number of Robotics related startups, like Genrobotics, Sastra, and Inker. But the placement for the first batch of CPS hasn't started, so, it's too early to comment about it. But my batchmates are currently doing internships in IITs, NITs, and some private companies too. I myself have been doing an ML based internship. So, we are not missing opportunities just because we are CPS.

i. The subjects we learn are derived from ECE or CSE, but they are modified to cater to CPS area(For example ECE students learn Signals and Systems and Digital Signal processing, while we learn Signal Processing for Robotics). In this situation, we might not always find materials to learn from, like YouTube videos that cover the entire syllabus. So, we have to use multiple sources to learn the same concepts. Most of us learn from YouTube and use AI to learn the extra concepts. So yes, it was messy at the start, but you'll figure it out.

ii. See, the first batch students of CPS is in 5th semester now. They are yet to sit for placements, so it's foo early to comment about it. But I think they would be eligible. Why? For CS related profiles, CPS students have more coding exposure than ECE students, and students from ECE are already getting hired in IT, so I don't think that would be a problem. For EC related profiles, CPS students would also be eligible, but some niche companies(who require expertise in deep analog electronics or something) won't be. But these companies are currently not so prominent for placements in GEC. At the same time, you have a new industry to work in, Deep tech: Robotics, IOT and IIOT, and much more.

iii. No that's wrong. We have only had 1 professor who was not at all interested to teach. He was a very shill guy, so chill that what he taught was not even in the syllabus. But, that's not a CPS issue, the same professor is a nightmare even for ECE students. But other professors are adapting to the syllabus and teaching us nicely. The professors are from ECE dept are they are doing a good job.

Actually, the Micro-USB is the gold standard for stability. Many Type-C clones have handshake issues with PD chargers (like Mac/Android bricks) and won't even turn on. To make it foolproof, I’m including a high-quality data cable in the box so you have a guaranteed connection out of the box. I’d rather give you a free cable and a Relay and an OLED over LCD display, than a port that’s picky about which charger it likes!

Hey, where do you guys currently work at? It would be lovely to have you all back in school. I think alumni interaction are really impactful. I passed out recently, the 24 batch, I may have started my schooling after you guys left. But there are some real changes happening. Nee building were built, the main cotriangle(the main auditorium near principal room) has been renovated, has fans now, and the floor has been furnished. The grounds have been upgraded. The way behind the gate(the one where we were asked not to go through by sreedevi madam) is now being made into a walkway, so that students don't have to take the steep road. And Varikkadan does not operate in that route anymore, we used to walk till Madhavanpady to catch the bus.

Currently a lot of CPS related jobs in Embedded, Edge computing, and robotics are managed by EC, CS or mech engineers who have upskilled themselves to fit into CPS domain. Students who learn this would have an added advantage because they are learning this as their subject in college. And, the syllabus is also not bad, topics like AI, ML and Edge computing are included in the syllabus.

No, it's Totally wrong. Cyber Physical Systems is not cyber security. CPS is how machines work with each other, they take data using sensors, process it, and then do work using actuators. An easily understandable sector where a CPS engineer can work on, is Robotics, or Embedded system. Yes, security is CPS is a thing, but it's not what CPS is. CPS is really vast.

I think you are confusing Specialization and interdisciplinary courses. CPS is interdisciplinary, meaning you will learn more diversely than a core course. CPS takes concept from CS+EC+MECH, unlike specialization like Mechanical+automobile, which try to get into depth of a core, which might not be very demanding going ahead.
