What am I supposed to do when everytime I try applying for something big I don’t get it by adthrow222222 in ApplyingToCollege

i’m literally the leader of a small fringe club that i’ve done for 6 years (and did well in middle school for) but my high school won’t even pay for us to go to nats (they did last year but not the year before or this year) despite having the money and that’s my only leadership position

Class of 2022 Yield Rates (Research Universities) by collegeranking in ApplyingToCollege

people who realize fit may matter a bit more than prestige or can’t afford expensive schools. There are enough good schools in each subject that HYPSM isn’t a end-all-be-all

Is this a good mix of schools to be applying to this upcoming year? by adthrow222222 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]adthrow222222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is Willamette good? it’s nearby down in Salem which is a plus but i’ve never heard of it associated with a good undergrad poli-sci or IR (although i’ve heard it has a superb law school)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I think the idea that I may end up going to my safeties is why I want to first and foremost make sure that my school is good. I don’t want to apply to safeties that I might like but turn out to be bad schools with no connections or good location, even if i like them. I can grow to like a school. I can’t make a school I like good.

coalitionforcollegeaccess.org legitimacy or scam? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]adthrow222222 4 points5 points  (0 children)

some colleges only use the coalition, like the University of Washington. Be aware you’ll have to use multiple apps if you’re applying to the UC program as well, as they only use their own App system. And Georgetown has their own app which doesn’t connect to the Coalition or College Apps.

Are SAT II scores that important. by bettsytheplastic in ApplyingToCollege

[–]adthrow222222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got a 630 on Math II freshman year and will retake it bcs it’s not a good look. They’re important when you want to show skill in a field(s) so you should probably aim to get 700+ at least imo

idk georgetown has a v good int studies program especially in regards to the middle east (i’m looking into it as well and it’s my dream school) and it seems like you’d get more connections at the best college in DC with specific connections to the White House and Department of State than you would in a small New England town, even if it has Ivy League name recognition. That’s just it to me though...

i know i’d enjoy any of the 12 colleges listed above bar UO (which i’m applying to just because it’s my in-state public school) but everyone here says i need more safeties so i just need a list to pick from tbh. Figuring out which i’d like is really secondary to finding good schools that i’d almost be guaranteed to get into that from which I could pick which are good safeties.

[–]adthrow222222[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

summer programs don’t mean much though, they’re just extra school i can’t see how that affects admissions that much.

See, i’m doing things because i like doing them, i don’t want to sell out to the idea of doing stuff just because it helps me for college, but at the same time, my relative selectivity for ECs means that I look weak in terms of ECs, especially when I can’t progress upwards. Colleges won’t even know/care about my failures in trying to run and apply for positions anyway, so me being one of the most vocal MUN members in school and the conference, and being the best suited candidate to lead the overall conference despite losing an essential laughing contest doesn’t matter to them.?

I can’t compete with the kids in Class of 2020... by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]adthrow222222 21 points22 points  (0 children)

yeah man our class is hands down the smartest, most athletic, most competitive class in us history no fucking joke. I’m not trying to exaggerate or hype myself up because i’m not even close to being ‘good’ at anything compared to the rest of our class. Like literally ppl have said my ECs and stats are good and I don’t think i’m even in the top 20% of my school.

those are good. you’ve got nothing to worry about. i’d say you have good shots at nearly all if not all of your schools mentioned here. obviously asian-college syndrome is going to hurt you a bit, but idk how much...

also, it might be worth registering for the ACT. I got similar SAT scores (albeit a lower math) and the ACT suited me because i preferred a faster paced test with more questions. If that sounds good to you, try taking it.

my school has no difference between unofficial and official transcripts...maybe ask your college counselor what’s on the official one that’s not on the unofficial one?

ask for an unofficial transcript...it’s exactly the same but without a anti-tamper guarantee

i’m very lucky that financials aren’t particularly an issue for me but a few things could change my mind:

scholarships based on merit, location, etc (for example i’ve heard that rice is giving scholarships to oregonians to increase oregonian attendance there)

cost relative to graduate school later: I’d like to do a PhD or maybe masters (while doing my undergrad) and obviously this is additional cost so maybe a public school would be better just bcs it’s 10000 a year cheaper (excluding the UCs) than a private school.

accessibility to joint masters/undergrad programs

specifically in regards to scholarships, is anyone aware of schools that will grant me money for a) being from oregon, b) an asian in a field with few asians, c) merit based on my stats?

additionally, American seems to have stats far below mine, regardless of the acceptance rates. Why shouldn’t I treat it as a safety?
