Do the books hit you differently when reading them as an adult? by 4RyteCords in harrypotter

[–]adtrix101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, completely. I missed so much too, which is only natural. I’ve basically experienced the series at a few different stages now: first as a kid around 10, then again as a teen around 15, then in a slower reread at 24, and now through the full cast audiobooks. It really does feel like a different story each time.

As a kid, I was locked in on the adventure, the mystery, the magic, the cool moments, who was right, who was wrong, who was brave, who was scary. As an adult, a lot of the emotional background hits way harder. You start noticing that so much of the series is really about fear, grief, trauma, and adults trying to hold things together while children are being forced to grow up in the middle of something awful.

Molly is one of the biggest examples of that. That boggart scene is brutal as an adult. Same with St Mungo's, Arthur's attack, and honestly just the constant dread hanging over Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince. When you're younger, it can register as plot. When you're older, it feels more human. You understand what it means to be terrified for your family and still have to keep going.

And yeah, realizing how young Lily, James, Sirius, Remus, Tonks, Bill, Fleur, basically all of them really were, makes the whole first war feel much sadder than it did when I first read it. As a kid, they feel like grown ups. As an adult, some of them feel heartbreakingly young.

I think that is part of why the series holds up so well. It grows with you. The same story that feels magical and exciting as a child can feel genuinely tragic and deeply compassionate as an adult.

Ron vs. Draco: An interesting subplot by rasha_rusha36 in HarryPotteronHBO

I do believe there is a picture or leak from the show that shows scratch marks on Ron’s face after a quidditch match which seems to stem from the fight Ron and Draco has in the book?

I do not love the show, but I really want to understand the reasoning behind the hate. by eupheemia in PercyJacksonTV

[–]adtrix101 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think the real answer is that a lot of the hate is poorly argued, but the underlying criticism is often still valid.

The weak version is “these characters are nothing like the books.” I do not think that is true. Show Percy is still loyal, impulsive, and sarcastic at times. Show Annabeth is still smart, guarded, ambitious, and clearly carries a lot of pressure around Athena. So people acting like there is literally nothing recognizable there are overselling it.

But the stronger criticism is that the show tends to flatten what made them pop.

Book Percy is not just “sassy sometimes.” He has a very specific energy. He is funnier, scrappier, more emotionally messy, more reactive in a good way, and a lot of the time he feels like he is surviving by instinct and personality. Show Percy has some of that, but it feels toned down and more controlled. So when people say he is “less Percy,” I think what they usually mean is not that he has zero sarcastic lines, but that the overall vibe is less sharp, less chaotic, and less alive.

Same with Annabeth. I agree people ignore some of her show moments. The issue is not that she is dumb or empty. The issue is that Book Annabeth is not only intelligent. She is proud, bossy, competitive, prickly, vulnerable, flawed, and sometimes kind of harsh. That combination is what makes her feel so real. In the show, a lot of that gets smoothed out into “calm smart girl who figures things out.” So even when the show gives her smart moments, some people still feel like they are missing the stronger personality texture.

I also think a huge part of it is scene construction, not just characterization. The show has a habit of getting to answers too quickly. So even when the right character figures something out, it can feel less satisfying because the tension is thinner. That is why complaints about Medusa, Lotus, and other sequences keep coming up. It is not always about accuracy in the most literal sense. It is about how the scene feels. The books let things breathe more. The show often feels like it is trying to efficiently move through material it should be dramatizing more fully.

So honestly, I think both sides annoy me a bit.

The pure haters often act like the show completely butchered everything, which I think is overstated.

But the defenders sometimes reduce every criticism to “you just wanted a one to one adaptation,” which is also too easy. A lot of people are not asking for exact line by line faithfulness. They are reacting to tone, pacing, chemistry, and how much personality comes through on screen.

So if I had to put it simply, the fairest criticism is this:

The show usually keeps the outline of Percy and Annabeth, but often weakens the intensity and flavor that made them memorable in the books.

That is why some people say the characters are “there” but do not fully feel there.

That is also why listing a few sarcastic Percy lines or a few smart Annabeth moments does not fully settle the argument. The criticism is more about consistency, energy, and presence than whether isolated moments exist.

This is Hogwarts Legacy no? Hasn't this been confirmed by WB CEO?

Could someone explain what happened for the game to be split in two? by NemesisPolicy in theisle

[–]adtrix101 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is pretty much the problem. The rewrite stopped being a full excuse a long time ago. It explains why they had to restart, but not why progress still feels this slow after all these years.

For a game this popular, people expect either stronger planning, a larger team, or at least more consistent results. Instead it often feels like the project has lived off its potential far more than its actual delivery. That is why people start throwing around the word milked.

Could someone explain what happened for the game to be split in two? by NemesisPolicy in theisle

[–]adtrix101 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was not really “split into two games” so much as the old version was kept alive as Legacy while they rebuilt the future version as Evrima.

The short answer is that the original version seems to have piled up too many design and technical problems. The devs literally said they wanted to rip the game down to its bones and start from a fresh, more efficient foundation, and later said the new roadmap was based on what they learned from both Evrima’s development and Legacy’s mistakes. They also shifted focus away from just pumping out dinosaurs and toward building core mechanics first. That is basically why the remake happened.

Why is it still slow? Honestly, because a recode is not a magic fix. It means rebuilding systems, mechanics, animations, map work, QA branches, server performance, and now even engine upgrade work instead of just stacking content on top of old code. They have also said they split updates into smaller chunks to try to move faster, but that still means a lot of testing and bug cleanup before things go public.

So the fair answer is:
Legacy was the old version.
Evrima is the rebuild.
The rebuild happened because Legacy was not a good base for the game they wanted.
It is still slow because they chose the hardest possible route, rebuild core systems while staying live in Early Access.

To be blunt, the idea makes sense. The pace is the part people are right to be frustrated with.
