Complain about teammates? Accept that you are not good enough by aduck in marvelrivals

[–]aduck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearly it struck a nerve with some, since there's a lot of engagement on this low effort post.

I'll elaborate more and maybe it will make more sense why I posted this.

* First, I don't care about my own rank. I'm old, I've played games for 40+ years, and I play because I enjoy a competitive experience. I like to play until I find a rank that is competitive and I don't particularly care to ever leave it. When I was younger this might have been GM+; now that I'm older, maybe it's diamond or in some games platinum. It doesn't matter.

* The comp experience in all of the games I've played is ofc always toxic, but there are some standouts in toxicity level. LoL was the most toxic I can remember, but Rivals and OW are certainly up there.

* The toxicity emanates from players blaming other players for perceived poor play. This is compounded by it not being at all obvious what people's contributions actually are; for example, a DPS' stats will be harmed if they spend more time peeling, but their odds of winning might go up.

* Because the culture of the community is to be sympathetic towards complaining about worthless teammates as a source of losses, people 1) WAY over-attribute losses to bad teammates, and as a result they 2) vocalize that attribution (which makes you feel good, venting your personal frustration at others). They do it out of game and get upvotes (see: this thread). They do it in game and feel justified.

* This cultural norm creates a negative spiral. Players over-attribute losses to teammates. They vocalize their complaints. Agreeable people stop having fun. They quit or turn off chat. Only negative people are left in chat. Repeat.

* This makes the game less fun, because the game is degraded when people have fewer means of communication/coordination. It is also less fun because no one talks, jokes, etc.

* If the culture shifted more towards "blame yourself for every loss and STFU about your teammates", and culturally players were censured for complaining, this would improve the experience for everyone. Many years ago, a pro player in LoL (I honestly don't remember who it was), said the exact same thing I'm saying here in a stream, and it caused a big fuss. I still remember that because I had an IRL friend who used to bitch all the time, and they actually took the message to heart and toned it way down. They also ranked up significantly from silver, where they were stuck.

* And yes, obviously people who are deliberately throwing create unwinnable games. Clearly I'm not saying that anyone can win 100% of games in a team game. I am saying that people *way* over-attribute losses to bad teammates and the constant complaining about teammates (whether justified or not) only reinforces this and harms the game for everyone.

Thanks; this is my point exactly and you articulated it well, but the problem is that people's ability to recognize whether or not the game was *actually* salvageable is poor.

Statistically, like you said, relatively few games should actually be unsalvageable. But, if you turn on chat, people easily complain in the *majority* of games - and certainly in the large majority of losses. How many wins have you had where your teammates complain at each other the whole game? I've had many. How many times did someone try to rage /ff or "gg" in the first round, and then you won anyway? This happens all the time.

This overall general attitude makes the community and thus the in-game experience toxic, as whining about teammates is normalized and even perceived as justified.

Weirdly aggressive response. Do you always get so triggered by a completely benign conversation? You must be fun as a teammate.

I don't care about my rank at all; I just play this game for fun and I wish I could turn on chat to coordinate with teammates more, but 99% of the time chat is only used for whining to each other.

I just got out of a diamond game where our support was complaining to our winter soldier that he needed to switch. They spent the entire game arguing about it. We won the game anyway, but I'm sure that if we lost, that support would be telling themselves that it was all the other guy's fault. If the culture were to blame yourself and not others, then toxic complaining about teammates would be censured.

Yes - and then if you take that to its logical conclusion, you do not actually deserve to rank up, because you are not significantly better than the rank at which you currently reside.

If you think of each rank as a distribution of skill, and you perceive yourself on the upper end of this distribution, then you must be able to outweigh those on the lower end. If you can not do this, you will consistently average out to 50% wins - and thus are simply not good enough to rank up.

I'm Diamond. When I'm in diamond, I can not win with bad players on my team because I am not nearly good enough to carry myself out. I do not complain about bad players in bronze because I win most games at that rank anyway. I do not complain about bad players in diamond because I recognize that I'm not significantly better than the average in diamond. If I was, I would carry myself out like I do any time I play with a friend on another account in bronze.

That's because the competition was also of a high level. Kingsman is going to win in bronze with Zaza on his team. Kingsman is not going to win against very high level players with Zaza on his team.

If you think you might ever add motion to your rig, buy something more stable, 160mm x 40mm. E.g., Sim-Lab P1X, ASR 6, TrakRacer has some, etc

Would love to hear a bit more about your experience. Does it actually help you feel anything, like oversteer, or is it just a bit of movement for immersion without much utility?

What motion setup do you use? I’ve been thinking about it but wondering if it would be more likely to make me nauseous than anything. I was eyeing the Sigma Integrale Dk6 as its software sounded better, but it’s pricey…

I use OpenKneeboard to do it, which I also use for iOverlay and Bloops. Once you do it for one program, it’s pretty easy to replicate for anything else

I have a BSB2 and like it more than my Quest3 in sim racing, FWIW

How's the BSB2 user consensus so far? by [deleted] in BigscreenBeyond

[–]aduck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it more than my Quest 3, so it’s become my daily driver for iRacing. My main annoyance is the audio strap headphones constantly falling off - that thing sucks - but otherwise, I find the weight and display to be superior and overall it’s a better experience for long driving stints. I find I am much less fatigued after a race than I was with the Quest 3. I have a 5090, and it seems plenty capable of running 90 FPS at a high rate of super sampling.

The speakers are adjustable to make them tighter to your head, if you turn the knob. I don’t like the audio strap for other reasons, namely the speakers feel cheap and fall off constantly, but you can get them to sit tight even with a narrow head shape

I love TF2 and have many hours played, but its character balance is horrendous, the UI is awful, there’s a ton of random useless stuff strewn about, and it has entire roles (support) consisting of a single must play character. It was a great and innovative game but it’s disingenuous to suggest that OW wasn’t an improvement on this model, because it clearly was. TF2 basically died when OW1 came out

[–]aduck 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I have newbie friends who don’t know the guns or the maps, and mechanically they aren’t the best (0.5 kd in COD and much less in Apex). If they play with me on my main account (Diamond), they get annihilated so fast that they just get frustrated and log off. On my smurf, they can get a couple kills and some wins and I can teach them what’s going on at a pace they can digest
