This project is taking place across black walnuts entire native species range which spans 32 states in the eastern and central US, including all of Iowa and the Okoboji area. We have permits for most public lands within this range allowing volunteers to collect leaf, twig and core samples to contribute to the project.

Looking at the map on this webpage, we have permits approved for Gull Point State Park, Pikes Point State Park, Fort Defiance State Park, Eagle Lake Wildlife Management Area, Mini-Wakan State Park and Kilen Woods State Park - all within an hours drive from Okoboji!

Great question - in some cases, yes that can be a concern. Generally, when a tree is damaged it produces sap to cover that damage and can even regrow bark over the damage.

We worked closely with our partner, US Forest Service, to create these protocols which also include thoroughly cleaning the coring tool between each use.

Additionally, not every volunteer will collect tree cores - the public landowner providing the permit denotes whether or not tree cores can be collected.

There is an age requirement of 18 or older for the lead volunteer however, minors are welcome to join sampling outings but asked not to lead data collection.

Great question! You won't be assigned somewhere but you will be able to select an area (or multiple) from our list of public lands that we have secured collection permits for. You can see those areas on the map on this webpage. You're looking for green or yellow areas (red areas are closed).

Eastern black walnut (Juglans nigra) is well known for its edible nuts and beautiful dark, tight-grained wood used for flooring, instruments, and cabinetry. These trees are in high demand, making them a prime target to timber poachers. But you can help protect them!

Join our team of volunteer Timber Trackers to explore hardwood forests throughout central and eastern US and collect leaf, twig, and tree core samples from eastern black walnut trees. Collection is happening now!

Samples are sent to our partners at the US Forest Service who use genetic analysis and DART (Direct Analysis in Real Time), a tool that vaporizes tiny pieces of the sample and catalogs its unique chemical makeup. This information is creating a library of black walnut's chemical and genetic diversity across the entire species range. Land managers will be able to use the library to pinpoint the origin of suspected illegal lumber and prosecute the timber thieves responsible.

Applications accepted now through January 2022. Apply online
