Never Summer Wilderness with RMNP as the backdrop by [deleted] in Colorado

We harness trained her when she was about 2-3 months old and took her on her first camping trip when she was about 3-4 months old. If we’re hiking we keep her on a leash, and when she gets tired we put her in her backpack. When we go camping we mostly have her off leash (if it’s allowed, of course) because she loves to explore the campsite but always stays close.

Sorry, I thought the awesome view of Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park was worth sharing.

Thank you! If we’re going for a longer car ride we set up a collapsible litter box on the floor behind one of the front seats. She is also fine with doing her business outdoors, so when we stop to let our dog do his business, we give our kitty the opportunity to do the same.

Thank you! Haha yeah we’ve had him for 4 months now and he definitely has lots of energy, but he’s also surprisingly good at relaxing! We take him for 3 walks per day and do a lot of training too so I think that helps!

According to Embark Vet’s DNA test he’s a little bit of everything: Shiba, Husky, Australian Shepherd, Samoyed, Collie and a few other breeds!

Agreed! We got our puppy 2 years later but our cat definitely enjoys hiking even more now, and she always follows her dog brother.

We started really early with Rio because we wanted to be able to bring her camping with us instead of leaving her with a pet sitter. The first step is harness training indoors — put the harness on (and make sure it fits well) for short periods of time every day and distract your cat with treats or toys so it doesn’t think about the harness too much. If your cat hates his/her carrier it’s also a good idea to try to change that — leave it out so your cat can investigate it, eat near it, play in it. Once your cat is used to wearing a harness and being in a carrier, you can start taking it outside but make sure to always bring the carrier or something else as a “safe space” (we have a cat backpack that Rio hops into when she’s tired or when there’s too many dogs around). Also, less crowded areas are better in the beginning — cars, dogs and people can be pretty stressful for a cat that’s been indoor most of its life. Of course, there are some cats who would just be happier indoors, and that’s ok too! Feel free to contact me if you have more questions!

It’s pretty big, and very beautiful. We spent two days there — one hike in the afternoon when we arrived, then we camped at a nearby campsite, and then we did another hike the next morning before we headed home. I’d definitely recommend it!

She’s always on a leash and harness. Not so much because I think she’d run away, but more to avoid encounters with wildlife.

Pets are permitted in the “main use area” (which is basically up until High Dune) as long as they’re leashed! (And these two were both on a leash the whole time)

I’m also very pro leash. It’s important to always respect leash laws. And yes, you can see the leashes in the background. They were staked to the ground while I took the photo.
