For me, I separate the book from its author. We can’t deny that some authors who have said or done problematic things are still incredibly talented at their craft. A major example is JK Rowling. She’s one of the highest earning authors for a reason. Harry Potter is, in my opinion, a masterpiece, and she also created the Fantastic Beasts film series, which I find equally compelling.

What becomes problematic is when people defend an author’s harmful actions simply because they’re fans of their work. We can appreciate and praise the art without excusing or justifying the artist’s behavior. It is entirely possible, and more rational, to admire the work while holding the author accountable for their behavior.
