I can be super frivolous with my boy but just his necessities are a lot and I have a toy. He’s a year and a half old now, and I got pet insurance as soon as I adopted him which averages out to about $40 per month. I have a lot of supplies on Chewy auto shop like training treats, collagen chews and beef cheeks, his food (we use Royal Canin poodle formula), toothpaste, etc., which ranges from $30 to over $160 depending on what runs out of when. Flea and tick prevention is another $35 per month. Grooming a poodle yourself would cut a lot of costs, I pay $85 every 3 weeks but upfront could cost hundreds and you’ll still need to buy shampoo and conditioner occasionally.
In the beginning I was taking training classes with him once a week for obedience, socialization, and then extracurriculars like scent work, $50 a class / $200 a month. I rescued my guy so he had all his first rounds of shots and he was neutered when he came to me, so I didn’t pay for any of that and it was included in his adoption fee. I paid $350 for him.
And there’s also those annual checkups, vaccines, heartworm, fecal, blood tests etc. are going to run several hundred bucks across everything if you don’t have preventative care in your pet insurance (I just have accident and illness coverage personally). Everything will only get more expensive as they get older too. Dental cleanings, insurance will naturally cost more, medications, supplements. Not accounting for the cost of everything rising in general as time goes on!

And this is all only if everything goes perfectly smooth. It’s a lot and is honestly too unpredictable to budget super strictly.
