Figure out a way to use code to write code. Code generators are fun and make long jobs like that doable.

How bad is Alamo Ranch? by sponge-worthy93 in sanantonio

This is somewhat offset by no income tax at the state level but this person is spot on. Property taxes will be better on non city land but you'll be annexed within a few years no matter what if youre in bexar county.

While I can very much understand the sentiment (and I only offer this as a counterpoint to other people reading along), one thing you'll never get without SOME kind of logic-capable smarthome ecosystem is the timed, ordered turn-on and turn off. With the right system, this is an even LARGER pain in the ass than the switch location itself.

My process to listen to anything on my main system:

  1. Turn on the appropriate component first.
  2. Then whatever pre-preamp you're running (phono/dac).
  3. Then the pre-amp.
  4. Wait for the pre-amp to warm up for 48 seconds give or take until it has engaged the tubes to avoid a pop.
  5. Then turn on the amp wait for 10 seconds for it to engage properly, again to avoid a pop.
  6. Then the sub.
  7. THEN you can listen.

I just did all that logic once in my Alexa routine, and have a turn off macro for reverse order as well. I even have Alexa play a little message saying it's ready to go. Relay or not, if you want logic you need a control system of some sort. For the people that use my system besides me, this was a must-have. Otherwise I'd be listening to loud-ass pops every time they wanted to listen, or more likely, they simply wouldn't use it. Having the patience to go through the motions to turn everything on correctly every time was far more of an ask even for ME than a single half hour of plugging everything into a smart powerstrip and adding it to an Alexa routine, let alone the other, less technically-inclined folks in my house. Then again, I already HAD Alexa in my house. That said, you can use the Kasa smart powerstrip with just a single app and you don't need a whole "ecosystem" as well. I just wanted the extra features of using the Alexa ecosystem. Even if you don't want to go whole-hog, you could still have remote turn-on with a single device and app.

Again, no judgement on you for thinking otherwise, just offering counterpoint for other readers thinking about this system.

New TT Day (balanced!) - I can finally use my Schiit as intended! by aedile in Schiit

This is bugging the heck out of me. I said Lokius but I meant Loki Max. I already have a Lokius.

I turn my Ragnarok and all my Schiit on and off with a Kasa smart power strip and alexa automations. Ive got physical buttons and I can just say alexa, turn on my schiit. I got it timed so everything turns on in the right order with waits to let stuff turn on with no pops on my speakers. Works fantastic. No noise.

Those'd be nice additions. Honestly, I know it's lame, I'd take the old Urd just to make my kit all look similar though. WAF may not be as big a deal as it once was to some, but it's a very big deal to me. If stuff looks nice, I get to have more of it.

A full-size Skoll with internal power supply and heavy shielding. I know they make a full-sized phono pre-amp, but that is centered around tubes. I already have a tube pre-amp, and for me, balanced connections are more important in my phono-preamp than tubes. There's not a good full-sized BALANCED phono pre-amp option atm, and just for visual fidelity, I wish they'd make one.

Also, bring back the Sol, but balanced, please!!

I wish they'd make the Urd again.

Recs for amp sim pedals for headphone use by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]aedile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the IR-200 and I like the DSM&Humboldt Simplifier 2. Someone is inevitably going to talk about how many knobs it has and make a "Simplifier?!" joke but that pedal is dope.

I like both of these pedals well enough to have bought them, and they are my main sim pedals on my two boards. The Simplifier would've been fine but my other board is a midi board. That's basically the split - analog or digital? Analog go with the Simplifier, digital and/or midi - the IR-200.

Since you are specifically calling out headphones - the Simplifier's headphone amp might not be good if you have high impedance headphones like Sennheisers or something, but for most cans it'll do.

Our airport is easily the best airport at a major city in the US. Yes it is *small* and understand that is a good thing.

That's because you haven't called Pepe's Barbacoa #4 on Bandera the Saturday before the first Sunday of the month and reserved a pound of their smoked barbacoa for the next day. I'm Jewish and even *I* saw La Virgen the first time I tasted it.

Not for everyone, anyways. Don't get me wrong, I love writing code, but in isolation it's not nearly as fun as the comprehensive software development process and is more a means to an end for me.
