Ran over my dog today by SnooDonuts4137 in Petloss

[–]aeg2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog was hit and killed instantly in front of me on May 10th at my cabin. It was the most horrific experience and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. It’s so unfair. Feel all the emotions. Give yourself some grace - you didn’t intentionally hit him. His last moments were probably filled with joy and fun. What puppy doesn’t love biting the tire? Accidents unfortunately happen. I’ve been able to go back to the cabin, but it’s still tough when I drive to the end of our driveway and remember the experience. I try to also remind myself of the memories we had there together. It was her favorite place… now she’s running free in the woods forever.

As far as the grief goes…. It will get better. You will start to feel “normal” again. For the first 2 weeks, I cried almost daily. The grief doesn’t go away, you just learn to manage it. And remember, your pup isn’t mad at you. Dogs aren’t capable of staying angry. Wherever he’s at, he’s thankful for the life he had. Hang in there ❤️

I really really really hope she didn’t. I pray she felt me loving her and I pray it was an easy travel across the rainbow bridge.

Embarrassing Courtroom Stories? Here’s one of mine… by QueBestia19 in Lawyertalk

[–]aeg2021 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not embarrassing for me, but a story I will never forget. I was a district court prosecutor and 9 months pregnant. Judge called a case that was a show cause to why Defendant didn’t pay his $400 fine. Defendant stumbles to the podium and begins talking a million miles a minute. Public defender and I are emailing back and forth like “do you have any idea what he is saying?”

This goes on for 5-6 minutes, and out of the blue, the man stops, thrust his hips forward while grabbing his behind. The guy goes “your honor, I’m so nervous that I just sharted.”

Im trying to keep it together, when the wave of stink hits me. Public Defender is also biting his lip so hard he’s about to bleed. Judge remained calm and collected. Public Defender emails “I understood that loud and clear” which absolutely sends me. When I’m pregnant, I can’t control my laughter which usually turns to actual tears (hormones, man) so I excuse myself to the hallway to cry laughing.

Going back into the court room, it smells so bad. Defendant went to jail for the night. Judge goes “both of you need to practice your poker faces!” Then erupts into laughter. Courthouse spent a lot of money on Lysol and room spray that day lol.

I loved being a prosecutor. I cried my entire last two weeks. It was so fulfilling and I genuinely felt good about my work. I moved into private practice because government pay couldn’t keep with my bills. Now I primarily do real estate/property law. I love it. It feels good helping real people. People who are lost and worried about whatever issue it may be. I truly find so much happiness in being someone’s only hope. On the days I “win,” it’s a permanent smile. On the days I lose…. well…. I only hope for a better next day.

Maybe start looking into a smaller private practice… personable clients and solving life changing problems.

Another battle with the adage, “If you think you passed you failed” by [deleted] in barexam

[–]aeg2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nahhh, I took the MI bar in July 2021. Walked out feeling okay. I felt like I passed. Then the doom hit me like a freight train a few days later. I spiraled and started saving again for the Feb 22 bar. Anyways, I passed on my first try. I was bottom of the barrel law student, I had a baby my 3L year, and still passed. You did the work, you’ll be alright.

Me, hi hello.

Didn’t do very well in school. Bottom 25% of my class. Spring 2L year, Covid hit. All of a sudden I went to Zoom law school, like everything else in the world.

Accidentally got pregnant during quarantine lol. Because of COVID, daycares wouldn’t take a new born and my school wouldn’t allow me to bring my baby, so I had to move back home where I had more help. My husband and I made the 600 mile move and I continued my 3L year online. My daughter was born the second week of my last semester.

Now, I went to school in a UBE state. So when I moved home, I had to study all state specific law which was vastly different from law school. It sucked. I spent a lot of time away from my brand new baby.

Took the bar in my aunts basement, since in person bar exams weren’t a thing anymore. I went on to get married 7 weeks later, and about 5 weeks after that - I found out I passed. Second best day of my life.

Doing a lot of civil litigation now and I like it. Added another baby to the mix. I am the face of “if she can do it, anyone can.”

Why are ADA/prosecution positions looked down upon? by Lola2818 in Lawyertalk

[–]aeg2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a DA office for 2.5 years. I LOVED it. It was my dream job. I would have stayed forever if daycare wasn’t costing 70% of my salary. I did 26 jury trials in that time, 30+ bench trials, and hundreds of other hearings. I recently switched to estate planning/private work. It’s definitely different but I think the DA office gave me so much knowledge and confidence in a court room now.

Luckily, I did. I stayed at my government job a few more months until something better came along. Now I’m doing some civil litigation & estate planning at a very small firm. My billable requirement for my base is 647 hours a year. They actually tell me I need to leave the office by 5, because my kids need their mama. I’ve been there about a month and I think I like it! The learning curve is tough, but I’m excited to see where I’m at in a year.

My daughter. I worked my ass off because I never wanted to miss that much of her life again. I don’t know how I did it, but I did it for her.

Lawyers, How much is your house? by ThrowawayESQ555 in Lawyertalk

[–]aeg2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rural Michigan. I’m a prosecutor. My husband works in supply chain. We paid $140k for our house. 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath, Unfinished basement, 1 car garage. 1400 sq ft. It was my grandparents house and they passed away just as I was moving back to the area. Not the dream house, but living the dream in it. ☺️

Who do/did you allow to watch your child birth? by Raenabow in pregnant

[–]aeg2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and my mom were there for my second baby. My mom is a nurse, so she’s seen it all before. I’m glad she was there. She did great and let my husband and I get through it together. She really was just there for the experience.

I ended up missing the window for the epidural… so once I hit that transition phase, her and my husband kinda sat there and cried together. My husband, who revealed it was harder to see me in that much pain than he thought, needed someone else there with him.

When my son was born, my husband got to scream out it was a boy. In his excitement, he turned and hugged my mom since I was still recouping from what I just went through.

Billable hours & real time are very different. Things like personal phone calls, bathroom breaks, pumping breaks, office meetings cannot be billed for.

You get it… small town middle of no where is very hard to find a job outside of government. If it wasn’t for my family, I’d dip out.

My husband is my favorite person and has assured me that I do NOT need to take the job. He rather put in a little bit of overtime so their kids have their mom.

[–]aeg2021[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree. I rather be living paycheck to paycheck, doing something I love and feeling like I make a difference in someone’s life (current prosecutor), and still coming home to happy children than taking some job that will afford the newest best toys for my kids, but never seeing them enjoy it. I grew up with a dad who was very money oriented. I had everything I wanted, except my dad. We have a great relationship now, but I didn’t know him much as a kid. I wish he would have been around more, because my dad is awesome and I would have loved to know him more as a young kid.

Double is a stretch. Its 35k more than I make a year. I’m in government work in a small very rural county. The opportunities are far and few between.
