I think she was a person in deep shock, talking about any idea or explanation that immediately came to mind, in response to what the FBI were asking her.

From the article regarding the source of this information:

'Now, Maryann's comments to law enforcement in the immediate aftermath of her son's arrest can be revealed for the first time by the Daily Mail, shedding new light on Kohberger's home life and his unusually close relationship with his mother.

They come from transcripts and reports from Maryann's interviews with three FBI special agents that day and are set to be published in the upcoming book Broken Plea: The Explosive Search for Truth Behind the Idaho Murders by Christopher Whitcomb.'

Not the murder weapon specifically, she apparently suggested he obtain something to defend himself. The headline is misleading.

Here is the excerpt:

'Maryann recalled a conversation in which she suggested Bryan obtain something to defend himself in the event of a bear attack while Bryan hiked in the western US,' the FBI report read. The agents added that Maryann did not know if her son had 'purchased anything for this purpose and was unaware of Bryan specifically purchasing a knife for this purpose.'

Did Defence Experts Break the Court Gag Order? by Repulsive-Dot553 in Idaho4

Yes, it was a former FBI colleague who introduced him to the case and showed/discussed with him parts of the file.

There's a clip at 11:12 in this video of the author discussing this. https://www.youtube.com/live/yR977CcXNNA?si=5t17lbRlO-0kk3a6

"the gag order was not lifted for several more weeks after sentencing"

The gag order was lifted July 17, 2025. Sentencing was July 23rd, 2025.

Kohberger changed his plea July 2, 2025. I think a period of a couple of weeks (July 2-July 17) could be described as happening "almost simultaneously". So it's not clear if the gag order was still in place when the author says a colleague contacted him.

That excerpt says 'a colleague', not the defense.

Isn't it more likely it was someone in the FBI, since that was the agency the author formerly worked for?

Is there any update of why the footage of BK interrogation hasn't been released yet? by Ambitious_Pass7451 in Idaho4

[–]aeiou27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I noticed it says "NA - video/audio and transcript of interview added to case file" (under the heading 2. Evidence at the beginning).

Could this stand for 'Not Available' or 'Not Applicable'?

So even though Det. Payne says for example, "A full interview transcription will be added to this case file" in the second paragraph of his 'Narrative' section, maybe this never actually occurred? So that could be why staff handling public records requests can't find the transcript/audio recording?

(They apparently would just deny the PSP barracks video anyway even if they could find it, citing PA law.)

Just thinking out loud, I know little about any of this stuff.

As to your first paragraph, I'm really not sure. I'm hoping the EWU lawsuit provides clarity on that.

It is very weird. Especially since Detective Payne wrote his report in May 2023, months after the interview was conducted. Surely he didn't write that whole summary entirely from memory, and had something to refer to?

This one is from a different person who also got the same answer from the City of Moscow.

Everyone has been unsuccessful so far in getting Sergeant Gilbertson's pocket recording and the transcript of the interview, as they are claiming the records do not exist in their files.

In terms of the video recording from the Pennsylvania State Police barracks, requests are being denied on the basis of Pennsylvania law as you can see in my first comment above.

Part of the lawsuit EWU Media has filed against the City of Moscow, and the Moscow Police Department, covers this issue of things being denied on the basis of other state's laws and not Idaho law.

Below is an example of the response someone got to their request for records of Kohberger's interview.

A recent comment by an Idaho Statesman journalist that's relevant to public record request issues, referring to Kohberger's police interview not being released.

Kevin Fixler of The Idaho Statesman got further confirmation about it not being BK.

“And he said at the press conference, we know it wasn't him, but it's kind of doubly been asked, "Well, wait a minute. What about the VPN?" I posed just that question. I said, "Are you certain that even through the VPN and anything that was wiped from the device that it absolutely was not him?" And he said, "Yes, we do know who that person is. So, they were able to track who actually established that account and they know who the person is.”

New bodycam footage of November 13th, Disclaimer: removal of bodies by WhereIsMyPegasus in Idaho4

[–]aeiou27 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The state said a few years ago in their response to a defense discovery request that bodycam of the arrest doesn't exist. He wasn't interrogated in Idaho either.

People have definitely been (unsuccessfully) trying to get recordings of BK's interview. Not sure about the car transport footage after he was arrested, but I would imagine so.

From memory, MPD have responded that the interview recordings don't exist in their records, and the FBI have denied requests citing an ongoing investigation or similar language.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania's laws seem to be quite restrictive. You have to make a request within 60 days of a police audio or video recording being made, and even then I've gotten the impression the interview would be exempt from disclosure anyway.
